President Donald Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social that Russian President Vladimir Putin called him to wish him a happy birthday, and the two world leaders agreed that the fighting between Israel and Iran should come to an end.
The two leaders spoke for 50 minutes, mainly discussing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Trump wrote of the call:
President Putin called this morning to very nicely wish me a Happy Birthday, but to more importantly, talk about Iran, a country he knows very well. We talked at length. Much less time was spent talking about Russia/Ukraine, but that will be for next week. He is doing the planned prisoner swaps – large numbers of prisoners are being exchanged, immediately, from both sides. The call lasted approximately 1 hour. He feels, as do I, this war in Israel-Iran should end, to which I explained, his war should also end.
Putin’s foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov told the media, “The dangerous escalation of the situation in the Middle East was naturally at the center of the exchange of opinions.”
“Vladimir Putin, having condemned the military operation against Iran, expressed serious concern about the possible escalation of the conflict,” he said, adding that the conflict will have “unpredictable consequences for the entire situation in the Middle East.”
Putin also offered to conduct mediation between the two nations, according to a report from the Associated Press.
“Russia’s principled approach and interest in the settlement remain unchanged,” Ushakov said.
The sixth round of negotiations between Iran and the United States, scheduled to take place on Sunday in Oman, has been cancelled.
