The last film installment in the Twilight saga may have been released all the way back in 2012, but the franchise has had a profound staying power over the years. Through memes, ships, Twilight has stayed young forever and always seems to be at the forefront of some debate or other.
Now, the latest popular theory that has been circulating online suggests that Bella was not quite the oh-so-human protagonist she seemed. Some fans think Bella might actually be part werewolf, unbeknownst to her and the other characters. This could potentially explain a lot in the supernatural Twilight universe, such as why Bella is able to shield herself from vampire powers. Though many avid Twilight-heads denounce this theory, here’s a breakdown of how Bella having werewolf blood could be the secret to making sense of it all.
Mind Reading
One of the most common unanswered questions in the Twilight universe is why Edward could not read Bella’s mind, which is his designated power. In fact, Bella is immune to many vampires’ powers. When Bella eventually turns into a vampire herself in the fourth film/book, this is somewhat explained because it turns out that her vampire power is the ability to shield against other vampires’ powers.
Still, a lot of fans were not satisfied with this explanation from the jump. Why was she able to shield herself when still human, then? Well, apparently some humans just have dormant powers that become “enhanced” in the situation that they become a vampire. However, vampire powersfamously do not have an effect on werewolves. What if, all along, instead of having a dormant vampire power, Bella had werewolf blood, and that was what kept the vampires from being able to use their powers on her?
Bella’s Pregnancy
Another reason fans suspect Bella of having a little werewolf in her is due to her ability to carry a vampire baby to term as a human in Breaking Dawn. Theoretically, this is not something that a human should be able to do. Yes, Edward turns Bella toward the end of the delivery of her daughter, Renesmee, but something about Bella being able to get pregnant in the first place has never quite added up.

If Bella had some supernatural lineage, it would explain further why she could withstand such a thing. Furthermore, it would provide better context for Jacob’s eventual imprinting on Renesmee, as wolves tend to imprint on other wolves. If Bella gave birth to someone who had both vampire and werewolf blood, Jacob’s feelings would still be star-crossed, but more rooted in the “science” of the universe.
A Wolfy Rebuttal
At the end of the day, there is actually a lot of evidence against the werewolf theory. For one, we know that vampires despise the scent of werewolves, and Edward distinctly loves Bella’s smell. Sure, maybe this is just her unique touch-of-human scent, but it does raise questions. Werewolves can also all read each other’s minds, and it is not something they can control, something that Bella can neither do nor help block.

Unlike Edward, none of us are mind-readers, so we’ll just have to continue to mine the text and films for clues. Only time will tell if there is something wolfier than meets the eye with Bella.
