Eminem Loses Himself in New Trailer for Documentary ‘Stans’

The word “stan” is used more now than ever before, describing superfans who take their “job” of being a fan seriously. They do all they can to protect, support, defend, and get close to their favorite celebrities. Whether it’s creating a fan page, camping outside their hotels, bullying other celebs/ non-fans, or more, stans can be the top-tier supporters in a celebrity’s fan base. These individuals are among a range of dominant fan bases, including Beyoncé’s Beehive, Nicki Minaj’s Barbz, and Eminem‘s Stans (yes, his fans are called stans). The word actually came from his 2000s song of the same name, where the Detroit legend raps about an obsessed supporter. Now, it’s the name of the upcoming documentary, Stans, set to be released on August 7.

According to Deadline, Stans will be produced by Eminem with AMC and Trafalgar Releasing. The documentary will explore Slim Shady’s rise to icon status and the loyal supporters who helped him get there. From creating hit records to becoming one of the highest-selling artists in history, his fans played a massive role in making those achievements happen by purchasing songs, albums, merchandise, concert tickets, and more. A forty-second teaser was also released to give AMC audiences a sneak peek at what to expect when they visit select theaters to watch it. The film will be shown in 135 theaters in the United States for a limited time, from August 7 to 10.

How the World’s Most Famous Rapper Almost Played an Iconic ‘Fast & Furious’ Character

Eminem would have played a key Fast & Furious when the franchise was conceived. However, he chose to focus on a personal project.

The trailer begins with the sound effect of thunder as the word “Stan” and its definition appear on a black screen. The screen reads that the term is a noun, describing it as “an overzealous or obsessive fan, esp. of a particular celebrity.” It then cuts to a scene of Eminem with his back turned towards the camera as the voice of a child asks, “Why did you write the song Stan?” More questions follow, asked by a variety of voices, such as “Was Stan based on a real fan?” “Why do you share so much about yourself in your music?” “What the h*ll goes on in your brain?” “How does it feel to be followed by so many people?” and more.

Viewers then see clips of thousands of screaming fans at various stages of Eminem’s career. At the 0:33 mark, the artist sits down and says, “What’s your first question?” Deadline also reported that AMC Theaters Distribution will launch the production by Emmy-winning writer, investigative journalist, and director Steven Leckart. The selected AMC theaters will also show the documentary twice a day. To have a chance at qualifying for awards, Stans will also be shown at AMC Empire 25 in New York for a week.

Trafalgar Releasing will premiere the production on August 7 (same as the U.S. release date), in more than 1,600 theaters across more than 50 territories. There will be full screening details released on July 24. Some fans might’ve seen the project already, as it premiered at SXSW London in June. The film’s full synopsis reads:

Through stylized recreations, rare archival footage, intimate interviews, and an exclusive original interview with Eminem himself, it offers a raw, loud, and revealing journey across his career — and the passionate audience that has grown with him.
