‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ First Reactions Are 100% Positive

When it was first announced, many people believed that the reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summerwas just jumping on the bandwagon to try and replicate the success of other revived horror franchises such as Scream. However, the first social media reactions have suggested that not only is the new iteration of the tale of a hook-handed killer with a score to settle a worthy successor to the original movie – the less said about the sequels, the better – but could well surpass it.

The new movie sees the return of original cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. who appear alongside a host of new, young stars ready to find their lives turned upside down in the bloodiest way. The official synopsis of the movie reads:

“When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer… and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.”

Anyone who believed that I Know What You Did Last Summer was just in it as a cash-grab may have to eat their words when the movie is released this weekend, as initial reactions have not only made it clear that there is a lot to love about this legacy sequel, but that it could also be one of the best legacy sequels ever made. Can the movie that was always seen as a poor relation to Scream finally slash its way to the top of the horror legacy sequel pile?

@srsoto26 said, “I can finally talk about [I Know What You Did Last Summer], which was my favorite movie of 2025 so far to the point where I literally left the theater saying I wanted to see it again immediately. The cast was phenomenal, new and returning. They all worked so well off of each other.” @filmsbyjuan hyped up the film more than possibly any other legacy sequel, commenting:

“I Know What You Did Last Summer is one of the greatest legacy sequels! With excellent kills, a thrilling pace & a fantastic ensemble, notably Love Hewitt & Prinze Jr. who DELIVERED some of the best parts of the movie. It’s undeniably a perfect summer slasher classic.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer has a very tough task on its box office debut, as it arrives in the wake of the mighty Superman and just before Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Horror movies have been carving out a lucrative niche in cinemas recently, and if the first official reviews continue in the same vein as these initial reactions, then there is nothing to say it cannot become a moderate hit this summer.
