‘Practical Magic’ Sequel Release Date, Plot, Cast, & Everything We Know

Decorated leading ladies Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman delivered bewitching performances in the 1998 romantic fantasy, Practical Magic. The movie is an adaptation of the Alice Hoffman novel, following sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, descendants of a long line of witches, raised by their aunts in a small Massachusetts town. The vastly different siblings are plagued by a family curse that dooms the men they fall in love with, with the duo facing off against the evil spirit of Gillian’s abusive ex-boyfriend.

Despite initially being a box-office dud, grossing just $68.3 million against its $75 million budget, Practical Magic earned praise for its beguiling blend of genres, including the supernatural, fantasy, romance, and crime, and has since gone on to become a beloved cult classic. In June 2024, fans of the ’90s gem were thrilled when it was announced that a sequel was in development after 27 years; let’s take a look at everything we know about Practical Magic 2.

Who Is the Cast of ‘Practical Magic 2’?

The Owens sisters will be back and ready for another spellbinding adventure in Practical Magic 2, as both Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are set to reprise their respective roles after more than 25 years since the original cult classic’s release. Kidman was the first to officially share the news that she and The Lost City star were heading back to Massachusetts and the siblings’ beloved coastal home, with the Oscar-winning actress telling People in June 2024:

“Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that. There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.’ [We] found a way in.”

Bullet Train star Joey King has been cast as one of Sally’s daughters after it was previously revealed that Evan Rachel Wood (who played Kylie in the original film) was not invited back for the sequel and was told by the studio that her character would instead be recast. In the original film, sister witches Sally and Gillian Owens find themselves battling against a centuries-old curse that kills the men they fall in love with. Together, the siblings combine their powers to destroy the malevolent spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend and break the curse once and for all. In July 2024, producer Denise Di Novi told Entertainment Weekly that the sequel’s plot will draw heavily from Hoffman’s follow-up novel The Book of Magic, stating:

“I think [fans are] going to be very pleased. We’re going to be very faithful. We’re cognizant to how important those characters and that movie are to so many people. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. We’re going to draw from Alice Hoffman’s books, as the first movie did, and we’re going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is.”

The Book of Magic is the final entry in Hoffman’s book series and follows the Owens family as they embark upon a crucial globetrotting mission to save Aunt Jet after she reveals she only has a few days to live. The sisters also discover they have a long-lost brother and use their powers to save a young man’s life, with the witches traveling to the English countryside, Paris, and London and visiting the land where their ancestor Maria Owens first practiced magic.

Bier is the first female director to collectively receive an Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy, and a European Film Award.

Akiva Goldsman is also returning to write the screenplay for Practical Magic 2, having famously penned the scripts for movies like Batman Forever, I Am Legend, and The Da Vinci Code, and winning an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for A Beautiful Mind. Both Bullock and Kidman will also be serving as executive producers, and passionate fans can breathe a sigh of relief that the sequel will be in extremely good hands and will honor the legacy of its predecessor.
