Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back for season 3 after a two-year wait. Rebecca Romijn and Christina Chong are excited for fans to see what’s next for Number One, Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh, and the crew of the Starship Enterprise.
In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Rebecca Romijn and Christina Chong play best friends. Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley is the perfect First Officer, and La’an is the Enterprise’s no-nonsense Chief of Security. However, Una and La’an undergo some changes in Strange New Worlds season 3‘s genre-bending episodes.
ScreenRant had the pleasure of chatting with Rebecca Romijn and Christina Chong at Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3’s press junket about Una being outranked in real life, La’an’s new dance partner, and dancing and singing on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, on screen and off.
Rebecca Romijn On Number One Finally Becoming A Captain
“Una’s Story Is Still Developing”
Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley is famed as the best First Officer in Starfleet, but Number One also gets more time in the USS Enterprise’s Captain’s chair in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. “I feel like we’re seeing little hints of Una in command and the type of captain that Una could potentially be,” says Romijn about Number One.
Number One’s future is new canonical ground for Star Trek, and Strange New Worlds will answer the nearly 60-year-old mystery of what happens to Una by the time of Star Trek: The Original Series. However, those answers will come when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ends in season 5. In season 3, Rebecca Romijn hints, “Una’s story is still developing. We’ll see. Let’s see where that goes.”
Rebecca Romijn’s Number One Is Now Outranked By Jerry O’Connell’s Captain Jack Ransom
“He Reminds Me All The Time That He Outranks Me”
Rebecca Romijn and her husband, Jerry O’Connell, are Star Trek‘s first couple, as they both played First Officers in Star Trek on Paramount+ series. O’Connell voiced Commander Jack Ransom on Star Trek: Lower Decks, but at the end of the series, Jack was promoted and became Captain Jack Ransom.
When Jerry thinks that he can outrank me, he never lets me forget it.
Meaning, Jerry’s character now outranks Rebecca, and he loves to remind her: “When Jerry thinks that he can outrank me, he never lets me forget it,” says Romijn. “Let me tell you, he reminds me all the time that he outranks me.” It may take until Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5 for Rebecca and Jerry to both be Captains simultaneously.
Christina Chong Reveals La’an Has A New Dance Partner – And A New Love?
“Where That Leads, Who Knows?”
Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh vowed to “change her paradigm” during Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2’s musical episode. True to her word, La’an has a new lightness in Strange New Worlds season 3. As Christina Chong explained, “Having fought the Gorn, she survived, and she’s loosening up a bit.”

La’an also found a literal new dance partner in Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck). Chong says, “[La’an] finds a dance partner in Spock, and he’s a great dance partner. And where that leads? Who knows. But that was super fun. All the dancing and rehearsals, and the extra hours we put in was all worth it.”
Christina prefers “La’ock” to “Spa’an,” which to her sounds like “Spawn.”
As for whether La’an and Spock become a couple, Christina and Rebecca teased that it might be the case in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. They both had fun posting Spock and La’an’s couple portmanteau. Christina prefers “La’ock” to “Spa’an,” which to her sounds like “Spawn.”
La’an Will Speak With An American Accent In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3
“They Were Like, ‘Yeah, Let’s Keep The American Accent”
Rebecca Romijn and Christina Chong agreed that their favorite Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 episode is the Hollywood murder mystery set in the holodeck, which was directed by Jonathan Frakes. Chong normally speaks with her native British accent as La’an, but Christina explained that La’an will sport a new American accent in Frakes’ holodeck outing.
They probably thought, ‘Oh, she probably can’t do an American accent…’
Chong explained, “Originally they didn’t want me to do an American accent… I just read it, and I was like, ‘Oh, that sounds like an American noir accent the way it’s written.’ And so I just assumed it was.” When Christina checked with the writers, she recalled, “They were hesitant about it at first… They probably thought, ‘Oh, she probably can’t do an American accent… So I did it for the read-through. And they were like, ‘Yeah, let’s keep the American accent.’
