However, what truly elevates The Diplomat above most other thrillers available on Netflix is its ability to perfectly split its runtime between Wyler’s immersive espionage endeavors and her complex marital life. The show never lets one story thread overshadow the other, weaving the geopolitical maneuvering and personal drama together in a way that feels grounded and relatable.
When compared with real politics and the inner workings of actual democracies, The Diplomat can sometimes feel a little too dramatic and over the top. However, it still manages to have some semblance of realism by situating itself in real history and presenting complex and layered character beats.
The Diplomat Returns For Season 3 In October
Netflix seems to have a long line of cancellations, even in the thriller genre. Fortunately, for The Diplomat, it has performed incredibly well both critically and commercially so far, which has allowed it to stay afloat without being prematurely axed. After premiering on Netflix on April 20, 2023, the show managed to return with season 2 in October 2024.
For her role in The Diplomat, Keri Russell has been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Award, and two Golden Globe Award.
Soon after season 2’s release, the show was renewed for another installment, which is scheduled to come out on October 16, 2025, on Netflix. Surprisingly, ahead of season 2’s release, Netflix has also confirmed the Keri Russell show’s season 4, making it one of the few rare series to secure multiple renewals in advance.
