Apple Maps cycling adds support in Hong Kong, Taiwan

Cyclists in Hong Kong and Taiwan can now tap into Apple Maps for safer, bike-friendly routes.

Cycling directions made their debut in iOS 14. The feature offers bike-friendly routes and details you won’t get from driving, walking, or transit directions.

Now, riders in Hong Kong and Taiwan can use iPhone to help them get from point A to point B. This rollout will likely be gradual, starting in major metropolitan areas and expanding to suburban, exurban, and lower-population-density locations in stages.

When you choose cycling directions in Apple Maps, the app prioritizes bike lanes and paths when possible. It also favors roads considered safer for cyclists.

The route may be quicker than driving if bike-only paths are available. Apple Maps aims to keep the ride both efficient and safe.

Maps also warns riders about upcoming obstacles or difficult terrain. This can include steep inclines or spots where you’ll need to carry your bike up stairs.

Apple maintains a list of countries where key Apple Maps features are available. As of now, Hong Kong and Taiwan aren’t listed under Cycling, suggesting a gradual rollout.
