The Issue: A presidential order that seeks to punish burning the American flag with one year in jail.
I am a Trump supporter, but his executive order criminalizing the burning of the flag is not only wrong, it’s a big political mistake (“Split opinions on flag burn,” Aug. 27).
He should know it’s a First Amendment issue, plain and simple, and just because he doesn’t like it (and neither do I), people must still have the right to do it.

I could not believe how so many people were offended that President Trump could lock somebody up for burning the American flag.
Wake up — you burn our flag, you do the time.
I’m sick of the disrespect shown to our president and our country.
This is the first step in protecting a precious piece of America.

There are certainly other ways to express dissatisfaction about issues, but burning the American flag should not and must not ever be a way to show one’s anger.
As the son of a Korean War veteran, I feel that the burning of our beloved flag is a gross injustice and insult to every single person who has served and continues to serve in the various branches of our nation’s armed forces.

The penalties Trump is seeking for desecrating the flag today are different than when he and I were in our 20s, but make no mistake about it: Trump’s executive order is another attempt to stifle free speech.
I agree with the late Justice William Brennan’s comments in Texas v. Johnson: “If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.”
If only our current president felt the same way.

I served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and was proud to have done so.
The American flag represents my service.
Many of my fellow Americans have served our country with pride and dedication and have saluted our flag.
Some have died and lost limbs.
Anyone who burns the American flag is disgraceful and should go to jail.

The Issue: A center-left think tank’s memo urging Democrats to stop using woke words and phrases.
Democrats are trying and failing to appear centrist with the proposed new tactic of not using a laundry list of woke phrases (“Dems’ Woes Only Start With Words,” Editorial, Aug. 25).
This list omits one that Democrats use every day: “Threat to democracy.”
Everything Republicans lawfully do is challenged by biased judges as a threat to democracy.
A real threat to democracy is opening the borders, allowing millions of unvetted into the country and shipping them to Republican-leaning states.
A real threat to democracy is counting those who entered the country illegally in the census.
A real threat to democracy is the Democrats’ tactic of gerrymandering voting districts.
The only real threat to democracy is the Democratic Party.

Democrats used all of these obnoxious words to rally their followers.
Now they can see that most people in America are just sick and tired of this rhetoric, and they know it’s going to cost them the midterm elections.
As always, they are so pathetic because they don’t realize that everyone can see through their ploy to seem sincere and caring.
Vote them all out.
