Former Miami Heat guard Mario Chalmers, of clutch fame, has now secured yet another championship following his game-winning three-pointer in the Big3 finals to finalize a 52-48 verdict in favor of Miami 305 from Chicago-and yet more proves that Chalmers really does shine in Game Time.

The video shows the dying moments of the Big3 championship; the teams play to 50 points instead of watching the usual game clock. Miami led 49-48 when Chalmers received a pass from former NBA star Michael Beasley and hit a three-pointer for the win at 52-48. Founded by Ice Cube, Big3 puts former NBA guys on the floor in half-court basketball with weird rules that include first-to-50-points with a win margin of at least two-points.

Chalmers is now 38 years and has almost become a monument for coming through on big shots. He is, of course, known for knocking down a game-tying three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in the 2008 NCAA championship while playing for Kansas, forcing overtime against Memphis, and helping Kansas win the national title. While in the NBA, mostly with the Heat, Chalmers also won two championships alongside LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh in 2012 and 2013.

From that moment, the social media buzz exploded into the universe, recognizing that Chalmers remains an asset in any clutch situation. One tweeter wrote, “Mario’s clutch gene is unmatched. Still remember his shot against Texas in the 2008 championship. Some players just have that winning DNA.” The user is putting Chalmers among those players who have made big shots, time and time again, at many levels of his basketball career.

Another tweet acknowledged his greatness across leagues by stating: “Mario actually have a CLUTCH Gene… we ALL know,” before jokingly asking how some others might have reacted in the same scenario. This comment represents an ongoing debate within basketball culture, comparing players’ abilities in clutch moments and frequently naming Chalmers as one of the few who shine in crunch time.

It looked like some people lacked comprehension of the Big3 scoring system, and someone was asking, “They were already up 1? Or am I an idiot?” referring to what was on the scoreboard. Another user clarified the matter: “In Big3, teams play until one reaches 50 points with at least a 2-point lead—no game clock, just a shot clock. At 49-48, Miami wasn’t winning yet. Chalmers’ 3 made it 52-48, clinching the championship. If missed, Chicago gets possession and a chance to score and win. That’s why it’s clutch.”

Miami Heat fans in particular were fired up, one crying out: “Aye THATS OUR FOREVER PG @MiamiHEAT,” showing the permanent bond between Chalmers and the franchise where he spent most of his NBA career and won two championships. This also indicates that date-winning players tend to remain dearly cherished by the community of the team they formerly played for.

These comments about Chalmers could not go without mentioning Michael Beasley, one spectator saying, “Beas carried this team to victory. Literally. Watch the clip again,” referring to the assist on the game-winner. This just shows how Big3 gives a stage for both players and lets them prove the skills that made them successful in the NBA.

This championship adds to his superb basketball resume featuring NCAA and NBA championships, putting him among a really select few who have ever hit it big on multiple major stages of professional basketball. From college, through the pros, and now in Big3, performing in pressure moments is what truly defines his career.

As Big3 gets bigger in popularity, Mario’s winning shot will serve as the bricks on the foundation of the sport’s credibility for the basketball community as big-name stars now get to play the game for real. For Chalmers, it’s yet another chapter in his book filled with clutch moments and proof that some guys just have that clutch gene that not only jumps leagues but also time.
