Oz Perkins’ Horror Thriller ‘Keeper’ Unleashes New Trailer Starring Tatiana Maslany

After the wildly divisive 2024 horror film Longlegs, and just a few months since he released the horror comedy The Monkey, Osgood Perkins has returned to deliver what’s surely one of his most interesting projects. Keeper, starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland, is his new mysterious movie – a project that has been kept under wraps amid some interesting marketing nods by Neon, the studio that has decided to keep Perkins under its wing. The new trailer for Keeper has been released, and if you thought that Perkins was going to reveal anything about the premise, you got the wrong idea. The film has just gotten way more interesting. And more terrifying, of course.

The trailer, captioned with “Why does it always have to end,” premiered recently on YouTube. Maslany’s character is seen being intimate with a man, but in the voice-over, her character seems to be asking herself some questions about them. A few eerie images later, it’s the man’s turn, and he goes through the same process. What’s interesting is that, in the trailer, she’s listed as “Liz” (note the quotation marks). But Malcolm is Malcolm, without the marks.

Could this have some meaning? Does the film take place in modern times? Then, why does the clothing feel out of place in some of the images that constantly flash on the screen? The synopsis for the film remains the same as when the project was announced:

A wife becomes isolated in a secluded cabin and has to fend off an unspeakable evil.

The press note for the trailer’s release also contains part of the lyrics to the classic tune, “I Don’t Want To Play In Your Yard.” Could this mean something as well?

You can’t holler down our rain barrel

You can’t climb our apple tree

I don’t wanna play in your yard,

If you can’t be good to me.

Osgood Perkins Is One of Modern Horror’s Most Original Filmmakers

NEON

With Longlegs, Oz Perkins had the support of Neon, a company that fully trusted the impact of the movie and executed one of the most interesting marketing campaigns in recent memory. Meanwhile, 2025’s The Monkey was a Stephen King adaptation, and the work to generate buzz was halfway done with the author’s name alone. Still, Perkins faced the challenge of the film’s polarizing tone, which survived a divided audience with a successful box office run.

Keeper, another 2025 release, is a challenge because of how close its release is to Perkins’ latest movie (he has also said that the script was being written while The Monkey was in production). But judging from what we’ve seen, Perkins is trying to deliver a completely different movie. One that feels actually closer in tone to the director’s psychological-horror-themed The Blackcoat’s Daughter.

However, there’s more to his career than just his last three films. Gretel & Hansel is a superb and atmospheric spin on the classic tale, regardless of the mixed reception it got. And the Netflix ghost film I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House is an outstanding slow-burn exploration of supernatural horror tropes. Before the release of Keeper, make sure you rewatch the first half of his filmography, as it offers a glimpse into the director’s most unhinged and experimental side.
