Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s returning secondary villain has been revealed, and the star teases that a revenge mission is coming. Directed by James Cameron, the third installment in the Avatar franchise continues the story of the Sully family, following them as their fight against the RDA intensifies.
As was revealed in the Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer, the upcoming epic introduces a host of new characters into the mix, including Varang (Oona Chaplin), the leader of the antagonistic Ash People. Quaritch (Stephen Lang) returns as well, adding to the film’s roster of villains, but another figure from the franchise’s past is also set to make a comeback.
After losing an arm to Payakan in Avatar: The Way of Water, Mick Scoresby will return in Avatar: Fire and Ash, with a new image in Empire revealing that the character will be sporting a high-tech new prosthetic. Check out the first look at Scoresby’s return below:
Scoresby actor Brendan Cowell teases that his character is holding a grudge after the events of the previous film, and his sights are firmly set on taking down Payakan for good this time. While Scoresby was driven by greed in The Way of Water, this time all he wants is revenge.
“What Jim [Cameron, director] and I talked about for Scoresby in this film is how he arrived as this wind-in-the-hair cowboy-of-the-seas in the last one, out to make some bank, have some laughs. He’s not in it for the wind, the hair, the laughs, or the money this time.
He lost his last fight, he knows there’s this generational, ancestral hatred towards him, and so this time it’s personal. It’s destructive. And in terms of what he wants to do, it’s probably a little more violent, too.
“We’ve all been there, right? An arm down, a few pissed-off Tulkun up! But don’t underestimate that Scoresby may use his loss and turn it into a superpower.”
What This Means For Avatar: Fire & Ash
After the tragic ending of Avatar: The Way of Water, all signs suggest the forces of antagonism arranged against the Sully family are only intensifying in the next installment. Not only do Quaritch and the RDA return, but the Ash People are poised to throw a wrench into things by seemingly turning against their own species.
From the sound of things, Scoresby’s revenge mission is focused mostly on Payakan, but Payakan being allied with the Sullys could mean figures like Jake (Sam Worthington), Loak (Britain Dalton), and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) also end up in his sights. Scoresby’s return also speaks to the setting of the upcoming adventure.
Though Fire and Ash is set to introduce new areas of Pandora and new Na’vi clans, including the friendly Wind Traders, the ocean will seemingly remain a key ingredient in the movie. This is reinforced by the introduction of a formidable new vessel called a Factory Ship, which makes the Sea Dragon from The Way of Water look small by comparison.
Franchise production designer Ben Procter recently teased that the Fire and Ash will end with a massive battle across air, land, and sea, and Scoresby now seems poised to play a major role in this. While it’s unclear how the upcoming film will end, it sounds like a proper showdown between Payakan and Scoresby is on the cards, and this could end in tragedy.
Our Take On Scoresby’s Return In Avatar: Fire & Ash
Scoresby was an interesting addition to the Avatar: The Way of Water cast. His more cowboy attitude made him quite different from Quaritch, and he served as an effective embodiment of the RDA’s destructive impact on the oceans of Pandora.
Sporting a prosthetic arm and a grudge, Scoresby could become a more prominent antagonist in the next film, and a further exploration of that character could make it all the more satisfying when he eventually meets his end. Many questions remain about Avatar: Fire and Ash, but Payakan should evidently watch his back.
