Stop flying to Cannes and go to ‘enchanting’ French hidden gem instead | Travel News | Travel

Going on holiday is a wonderful opportunity to take a break from your day-to-day responsibilities and have some fun. And while you may have locations that you love going to, it’s always fun to see new places and embrace different cultures if you travel to another country. While tourist hotspots are on many people’s bucket lists, sometimes beautiful hidden gems get missed.

This incredible European coastal town is said to be totally worth a visit – and not many people know about it. The charming town of Collioure in southern France boasts beautiful scenery, plenty of history, a quaint town centre and a fantastic beach front. It offers plenty of opportunity to relax while providing plenty to do and see.

Visitors often go and explore the Château Royal de Collioure, Fort Saint-Elme, and the bell tower of the Notre-Dame-des-Anges Church. Others congrecate near the marina.

Admire the colourful fishing boats and bright houses while taking a stroll along the harbour. Soak in the picturesque views of the sea, stop for lunch for some fresh fish, and follow it all up with a trip to a secret vineyard.

The fairytale town features a mix of French and Spanish architectural influences, which is hardly surprising. It is on the Spanish border and has strong cultural ties to Catalonia, located two hours from Barcelona and three hours from Nice.

An American woman, named Maddie, has moved to France and has been sharing her thoughts on different areas she has explored. The travel lover, who lives in Paris, cannot recommend Collioure enough.

After sharing a video on TikTok showcasing the town’s beauty, Maddie said: “This south of France hidden gem feels like being transported into a fairytale. Just a two-hour drive from Barcelona and about three hours from Nice, this seaside town of Collioure is one of the most enchanting places I’ve ever been.”

She added: “It’s a vibrant mix of French and Spanish culture. You can really see its Catalan routes in the architecture and the food and the colours. You can spend your days here strolling the beautiful cobblestone streets, swimming in crystal clear blue water, enjoying some fresh seafood overlooking the medieval castle, visiting local art galleries, and shopping at locally owned boutiques.”

She said the place is “so quiet, romantic and under the radar”.

Commenting on Maddie’s video, one individual said: “Such an underrated spot!” “Omg just put it on my list,” commented another impressed individual. “Adding to my list for next summer,” insisted one other.

One other said: “Excellent video. I enjoyed visiting there last year.”

How to get there

You can travel to Collioure by getting the Eurostar from the UK to Paris and then changing onto a national train. The journey typically takes just over nine hours from London St Pancras International.

If flying is more your thing – and you want to get there quicker – you can fly to Perpignan-Rivesaltes Airport, located about 18 miles away from Collioure. The flight time is just over two hours and you can then drive or catch a train.

Another option is Girona-Costa Brave Airport in Spain. The flight time is around two hours and 10 minutes from the UK. From this airport to Collioure, it will take you around one hour and 50 minutes in a car, or just over an hour on a train or via bus.
