‘The Tocix Avenger’ Reboot Goes Viral for New Medical Debt Marketing Stunt

To call the internet a toxic cesspit that’s burrowed its way up from the depths of hell might be an understatement. But, sometimes even toxicity can bear something heartwarming. That’s exactly what 2025’s most toxic superhero movie (literally) just did in its latest marketing stunt. Just like the battle of the popcorn buckets, 2025 has also seen movie distributors try to one-up each other with viral marketing stunts, including planting actors dressed as characters at sports games and other public places. But Macon Blair’s The Toxic Avenger is saying no to all of that, and is going viral for the right reasons. While Hollywood is notorious for wasting millions on excess, The Toxic Avenger is putting its money where its mouth is in a moving online campaign.

The Toxic Avenger shared a new promo on the film’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, and it might be the closest thing we have to a real-life Avenger. The promo didn’t show off any new footage, nor did it waste millions of dollars on a viral campaign. Instead, it put those millions towards something useful. The Toxic Avenger has partnered with Undue Medical Debt to help end unpayable medical debt across the country. The partnership will erase at least $5 million in unpayable medical debt.

But that’s not all, as the film’s box office gross will also go towards paying off medical debt across the US. “For every $1M The Toxic Avenger makes in theaters… We’ll erase another $1M in medical debt,” reads the promo. Check out the full video below…

What Is ‘The Toxic Avenger’ About?

If you’re unfamiliar with the smell of VHS cleaner, then you’ve likely never watched the original Toxic Avenger. Released in 1984 and directed by Lloyd Kaufman (who penned the script) and Michael Herz, the original was a modest success, despite its very limited release. It opened on 45 screens in the US, and grossed $140k in its three-day run. But The Toxic Avenger became a cult classic, and the new reboot has been in the works for many years now.

Thankfully, Cineverse is finally bringing the rebooted Toxic Avenger to the big screen. Peter Dinklage stars as Winston Gooze, a downtrodden janitor who decides to become a superhero after falling into a vat of acid. It’s like an alternate version of The Joker, where he uses violence for good. The Toxic Avenger is a hyper-violent and bloody spin on the superhero genre, complete with gross-out humor and gruesome body horror befitting its title. The official synopsis reads:

“When a downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze, is exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident, he’s transformed into a new kind of hero: The Toxic Avenger. Now, Toxie must rise from outcast to savior, taking on ruthless corporate overlords and corrupt forces who threaten his son, his friends, and his community. In a world where greed runs rampant… justice is best served radioactive.”

The Toxic Avenger opens in theaters on August 29, and the first reviews have already flooded the internet. The film currently boasts a very strong 89% Rotten Tomatoes score. Although this is subject to change once the film is released.
