Fans love to see a franchise crossover on screen, whether it’s Freddy Krueger taking on Jason Voorhees or two beloved cartoon families, The Flintstones and The Jetsons, meeting for a centuries-spanning adventure. But franchise crossovers are rare, often stalled by rights issues or creative disagreements. Still, sometimes you just have to put the idea out into the world and hope for the best, especially if the crossover already exists in another medium.
Recently announced at San Diego Comic-Con, the King of Monsters himself, Godzilla, will get a crossover comic with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles through publisher IDW. Despite the obvious size difference, the crossover promises plenty of fun scenarios for fans of both franchises. Here is what you need to know about the release and why it may work on the screen.
The ‘Godzilla’ and the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Crossover
The Franchises Are Set to Clash on the Pages of a New Comic Series
Set to hit the shelves on November 12, 2025, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla will be helmed by the creative team of writer Tim Seeley and artist Fero Pe. Seeley is also working on the current run of the Godzilla comic series for IDW, while Pe recently worked on a crossover with the turtles, providing artwork for TMNT X Stranger Things in 2023. Speaking at the announcement, editor Jake Williams talked about the process of bringing these two together: “Mashing them up has been a complete and utter joy. These characters are so perfectly realized that working on this comic feels like bearing witness to a natural encounter between living and breathing beings” (via CBR).
At the announcement, there was also a hint as to what the story would follow, including the exploration of how the Foot Clan was initially formed to protect Japan from Godzilla and how Shredder plans to use the iconic kaiju to raise an army of giant monsters. Of course, both of these franchises have clashed with other properties in the comic books, with the TMNT teaming up with icons like Batman and Power Rangers in the past, and Godzilla recently coming up against iconic heroes in Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe. However, when it comes to bringing two franchises together on screen, TMNT and Godzilla seem like the perfect pairing.
It May Be a Long Shot, but ‘TMNT’ and ‘Godzilla’ Would Make for Great Screen Partners
While both have a history of crossovers, the worlds of kaiju and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have proven highly adaptable across media. There is undoubtedly a purist version of both franchises: the Toho version of Godzilla, which serves as a way to express the fears and trauma of the Japanese people from the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and the Turtles, as a gritty, outsider comic book riddled with teen angst. However, there is no denying that both Godzilla and the TMNT have indulged in the sillier side of their franchises.
Taking the two franchises and letting them be at their most silly and indulgent would make for a great theatrical experience. Think CGI animation, with the Turtles’ signature tongue-in-cheek humor and a dash of anime influence from Japan, and you have a mash-up that complements itself; go big and ridiculous, give the turtles a giant mech! One can always dream, but until then, you can check out the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla comic on November 12, 2025, and get a look at what this legendary mash-up could look like on the screen.
