Even though no official announcements surrounding a direct follow-up of Mare of Easttown have been made yet, the show can return with season 2 in the most unexpected way. In a recent interview, the Mare of Easttown‘s creator, Brand Ingelsby, dropped some intriguing revelations about his plans for the future, raising hopes for its return after four years.
Created and written by Brad Ingelsby for HBO, Mare of Easttown premiered with an almost perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%. The show not only performed incredibly well among critics but also went on to win big during the award season. It earned sixteen nominations at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards and ended up winning four.
Three of Mare of Easttown‘s main cast members, Kate Winslet, Julianne Nicholson, and Evan Peters, also won Emmys for their incredible performances in the series. Unfortunately, even with so many accolades, the show was largely seen as a miniseries with a conclusive ending. Interestingly, though, it might finally return with an unexpected story.
Mare Of Easttown’s Creator Has Teased A Potential Crossover With HBO’s Task
Mare of Easttown creator Brand Ingelsby discussed the show’s future (via The Hollywood Reporter), revealing that he would love to see a crossover between his two acclaimed HBO shows: Task and Mare of Easttown. Like Mare of Easttown, Task, too, is a miniseries that earned immense acclaim after its release.
Similar to Mare of Easttown, Task also unfolds in Philadelphia. The two shows do not feature any explicit connections to one another, and Task unfolds more like a game of cat-and-mouse instead of being a whodunit like Mare of Easttown. However, owing to their shared setting and showrunner, it is hard not to see how their crossover could work incredibly well.
Ingelsby clarified that even though he envisions a crossover between the two because of how they take place in the same world, he does not have a concrete story in mind. He admitted, however, that he would love to see an intersection between the character beats of both series, which raises hope that both shows could return together in some capacity.
Kate Winslet Returning In A Task Crossover Would Be Better Than A Proper Mare Of Easttown Season 2
Mare of Easttown season 1 ended on a conclusive note, so it had always made sense for HBO not to extend it beyond its first installment. Given how the show’s first installment was almost a perfect mystery thriller series with nearly no loose ends left after the conclusive arc, an official season 2 would also likely have a hard time meeting the high expectations set by its predecessor.
Put simply, Mare of Easttown would face the same curse as True Detective, where the opening installment is so strong that every other follow-up feels weak. Owing to this, a crossover follow-up show, featuring characters from Mare of Easttown and Task, would make a lot more sense, as it would not be held to the same standards as Mare of Easttown.
Did You Know: Evan Peters and Patrick Murney were both born in 1987, but Murney was aged through make-up and given a fake beard in the series to ensure he convincingly looked like Erin’s father.
While a direct follow-up to Mare of Easttown season 2 would still be exciting, HBO cannot risk diminishing its legacy by unnecessarily expanding it with potentially subpar follow-ups. Hopefully, the hinted crossover will see the light of day and become another worthy addition to the overarching franchise.
