Disney has finally made a decision over the fate of Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show, and after much debate and controversy, Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to ABC Tuesday evening following the host’s comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kimmel was suspended almost a week ago, after his comments about the identity of the gunman who was responsible for Kirk’s death. In the episode that aired a week ago, Kimmel said, “We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it.”
The fallout of the comments has been the subject of scrutiny ever since, as ABC made the decision to suspend the show “indefinitely.” Now, Disney, the parent company of ABC, has released a statement confirming that Kimmel will be back on air tomorrow.
“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
Of course, whatever the outcome had been, there were going to be plenty of people who were not happy. If Kimmel’s show had been permanently scrapped, the 400+ celebrities that recently signed an open letter, over 80,000 who signed a petition to boycott Disney and ABC, and all those who have publicly supported Kimmel on social media would not let the matter go just like that. However, with Kimmel now set to be back on screens in the next 24 hours, it is likely that Kimmel’s good friend, President Trump, is going to have his own thoughts on the matter, and will no doubt share them very soon.
