Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning has lined up his next film, and there is a chance that it could be turned into a new franchise. Paramount Pictures acquired the highly coveted project at auction, with “ambitions” of possibly expanding the story in the future. For now, Rønning is set to direct the first entry, titled Here Be Monsters. The film is described as a sea-centric survival thriller that is reportedly reminiscent of major sci-fi horror classics like Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien, which spawned several sequels, and John Carpenter’s The Thing, which is widely considered one of the best movies ever made and a benchmark of its genre.
As reported by Deadline, the mysterious Here Be Monsters is the latest IP with franchise potential to be snapped up by Paramount since merging with Skydance Media. It is understood that the new studio leadership group is focused on prioritizing some of its most recognizable franchises, such as Transformers, while also ushering in and building out new ones, with Rønning’s creature feature as a prime example. The plot is being kept under wraps for now, but the title and details shared so far offer a few clues. It sounds like the passengers of a sea vessel will fight for their survival against a monster lurking in the great unknown.
More to come…
