Where To Find Every Great Fairy Fountain In Breath Of The Wild

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you can find and unlock four Great Fairy Fountains scattered across the open world of Hyrule. Familiar locations from past Zelda games, these monuments are capable of upgrading Link’s armor sets to make them more powerful. By finding each of these structures, you can drastically improve your defense, making Hyrule’s dangers easier to face.

Whenever you unlock a Great Fairy Fountain to upgrade Link’s armor in Breath of the Wild, you have to donate a certain amount of Rupees first. The first Fountain you find costs 100 Rupees, increasing to 500 for the second, 1,000 for the third, and finally a whopping 10,000 for the final one. To get every improvement possible, you might have to grind for the necessary currency.

What Do Great Fairy Fountains Do In BOTW?

Each Great Fairy is housed in a large, closed flower, most of which can be seen from a distance thanks to the glowing orange paths that lead up to each one. As Link gets closer, the Great Fairy Fountain music will get louder and louder, making them easier to track down.

You technically don’t need to have found every Great Fairy Fountain to beat Breath of the Wild, but it is an excellent postgame activity if you are trying to 100% everything.

Unsurprisingly, Fairies can often be found flying near the Great Fairy Fountains, acting as revival items in your inventory. Should Link die with a Fairy, that being will restore your health to five hearts instead of getting a “Game Over.” In addition, there are specific herbs that can be found growing around each of the Fairy Fountains, making them great locations to gather cooking ingredients too.

Each Great Fairy that Link unlocks will allow him to upgrade his armor in exchange for materials such as bugs, fish, and monster parts. With each upgrade, the rarity and quantity of the necessary items increase.

Some Fountains require rarer parts, such as Lynel Horns or Molduga Guts. However, not only will each piece of armor’s effects and defense improve when upgraded, but certain sets will also provide players with a set bonus when they upgrade all three pieces to level 2 or higher. For example, the upgraded Desert Voe set will grant Link shock resistance, and the Stealth Armor set will boost Link’s movement speed at night.

All Great Fairy Fountain Locations In BOTW

Search For Each Of The Recognizable Landmarks In Any Order

Tera can be found in the Great Fairy Fountain at Dragon's Exile in Breath of the Wild.

Since Breath of the Wild is an open-world game, you can search for any of the Great Fairy Fountains in whatever order you please. That being said, some might be easier to reach with specific abilities or gear Link gets from progressing naturally through Hyrule along the game’s recommended path.

In total, there are four Great Fairy Fountains scattered across the map, with each one having distinct traits that make them unmistakable once you see them. To fully upgrade Link’s armor, you need to find all four, so be prepared to scour the open world far and wide.

Great Fairy Fountain #1 — Cotera Location

The first Great Fairy Fountain that you will likely come across is located near Kakariko Village, one of the first areas players will reach as part of Breath of the Wild’s main quest. As part of an optional side quest, players can talk to the artist Pikango, who paints in the middle of town between Impa’s house and the Goddess Statue.

Not only will he give players a hint about the Fountain’s location, but he’ll lead them most of the way there, stopping near the Ta’loh Naeg Shrine when he gets tired. The Great Fairy Fountain can be seen when you follow the path the rest of the way into the forest.

To complete Pikango’s quest, you need to take a picture of the Great Fairy Fountain and show it to him, which requires the Camera Rune for the Sheikah Slate from the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab in Hateno Village.

Blue Nightshade and Silent Princess flowers grow near this Fairy Fountain, both of which are required to upgrade the Stealth Armor. This will provide Link with a stealth boost when cooked into food, giving you a strong way to remain unseen against some of the dangers lurking in Hyrule.

Great Fairy Fountain #2 — Mija Location

Another of Breath of the Wild’s Great Fairy Fountains can be found in the Akkala region of the map, just south of Lake Akkala. This is where players can build Tarrey Town as part of the game’s longest side quest. The Fountain is close to the road, tucked away in a small section of woods on a cliff above the lake.

The Dah Hesho Shrine is the nearest landmark in this area, acting as a visible structure seen southwest of the Fountain. Since this Shrine is located at a slightly higher elevation, you can easily glide down to the Fairy Fountain from the Dah Hesho Shrine.

Once you discover this Fountain, survivalists will be able to find lots of Amoranth growing near Mija’s Fairy Fountain, which raises Link’s defense when added to a dish.

Great Fairy Fountain #3 — Kayasa Location

Once you make your way to the Tabantha region of Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule, a Great Fairy Fountain can be found just past the Tabantha Great Bridge. Like Mija’s Fountain, this structure can be found near the road, but players will have to be wary of the Guardian Skywatchers that patrol the area.

To save some money to afford your third Great Fairy Fountain, pick up the “A Gift for the Great Fairy” side quest from Toren at the Tabantha Bridge Stable. This missions allows Link to gain 500 Rupees without issue to contribute to the growing fund for Fountains.

By scaling the cliff at Piper Ridge and traveling north, players can glide down to the Great Fairy Fountain easily without being spotted. This is because the Fountain is tucked up against the cliff on the north side, giving you a natural piece of the environment to hide behind as you glide.

This Fountain can also be seen from Tabantha Tower, giving you another way to easily reach it by gliding off the Tower’s south side. Kayasa’s Fairy Fountain has plenty of Mighty Thistles growing nearby, which provide an attack boost when cooked into meals.

Great Fairy Fountain #4 — Tera Location

In Breath of the Wild’s Gerudo Desert, the final Great Fairy Fountain can be found tucked away beneath a massive Leviathan skeleton in the southwest corner of the map. This location, known as Dragon’s Exile, is also home to the Hawa Koth Shrine, which makes this Fountain one of the easiest to teleport back to.

As you use the Fountain for frequent upgrades to prepare for Calamity Ganon, you’ll also be able to find plenty of Cool, Warm, and Electric Safflina around this Fountain. Despite these benefits though, the deep desert location of this Fountain makes it one of the hardest to unlock.

You likely will need a Sand Seal to make it to the Tera Fountain, meaning it may not be one you unlock until much later in the game. Yet, the prospect of Link being able to fully upgrade all of his armor in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild makes the effort of reaching every Great Fairy Fountain location more than worth it.
