17 Years Later, One of the Greatest Sitcoms of All Time Is Finally Set to Return

It’s time to throw up some thumbs and reunite with some friends as one of the greatest sitcoms of all time is all set for a long-awaited revival. Bringing beloved and long-finished comedy shows has become something of a trend in recent years, with the likes of Frasier, King of the Hill, and more having returned to our screens decades after they first began and subsequently ended.

Now, it’s time for The Inbetweeners to make their triumphant return, as the “Pussay Patrol” will once again strut their stuff some 17 years after the beloved British series first started. According to a report by Deadline, a deal has been “struck by Banijay UK and Fudge Park Productions,” meaning that the gang will be back for more pathetically familiar chaos and gloriously creative foul-mouthed banter.

Further details of exactly what sort of shape The Inbetweeners revival will take remain under wraps at present, but the report states that it could be either a movie or TV series, with a stage iteration also being “considered.”

Will ‘The Inbetweeners’ Revival Be a Sequel Series, Movie Follow-Up, or Spin-Off?

Beginning back in 2008, The Inbetweeners introduces audiences to Will McKenzie (Simon Bird), Simon Cooper (Joe Thomas), Jay Cartwright (James Buckley), and Neil Sutherland (Blake Harrison), four friends who fall pretty low down on the social ladder. The gang try their best to stick together as they attempt to navigate the awkward years of adolescence. Boasting a stellar supporting cast that includes comedian and Taskmaster host Greg Davies, the series is now considered one of the best sitcoms of all time and holds scores of 83% and 93% from critics and audiences, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Inbetweeners did reunite twice on the big screen for The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011, which saw them head off to Malia, and The Inbetweeners 2 in 2014, which finds the gang “traveling” across Australia (Peacemaker fans will spot Vigilante actor Freddie Stroma in one of his earlier roles).

The Inbetweeners was originally produced by Bwark Productions, founded by creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris. They later sold to Zodiak Media, which was subsequently acquired by Banijay in 2016, while the writers set up Fudge Park. “Incredibly exciting to be plotting more adventures for our four favourite friends (ooh friends),” Beesley and Morris said in a joint statement regarding the revival announcement. “I have worked with Damon and Iain on a number of Fudge Park projects over the years and was delighted to pick up the conversation about the future of The Inbetweeners with them,” Banijay UK CEO Patrick Holland added. “They have an infectious creative vision for the brand which will resonate with audience old and new so I can’t wait to get going.”

A third Inbetweeners movie has been teased in the past and would find the titular group heading to Las Vegas. For now, we will have to wait to find out whether this revival project will see the original four return (all of whom are now either in or nearing their 40s) for either another series or a movie, or whether the project will be a spin-off with new characters and cameos from the original stars.
