Scotland is renowned for its beauty, with numerous charming towns offering visitors a delightful getaway. Recently, however, one town just an hour from Glasgow has been garnering attention due to its rich history and stunning walking trails.

Callander has been capturing the hearts of many, as shared by various individuals recounting their adventures online. The quaint town, particularly enchanting during the autumn months, has been lauded for its adorable houses, cosy tea shops and fantastic walking spots. It’s so pretty people are instantly falling in love with the small town.

This comes as several parts of Scotland have recently piqued people’s interest. Indeed, another small town was also previously commended for its beauty.

For those unfamiliar with Callander, it boasts a rich history, with traces of Neolithic settlements, a significant Roman fort and medieval sites. These later evolved into a popular Victorian tourist destination following Sir Walter Scott’s 1810 novel, maintaining its 19th-century popularity to this day.

The town, believed to have been established in the 18th century, is home to Ancaster Square, named after the Rob Roy Centre. Visitors will find plenty to do and explore during their stay.

In Callander, local attractions such as the Hamilton Toy Collection are a must-see, and visitors can also take in the stunning scenery with walks on the Callander Meadows or Bracklinn Falls. For those seeking larger outdoor adventures, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park is just a stone’s throw away.

Nearby attractions include the Sir Walter Scott Steamship on Loch Katrine, Stirling Castle and Blair Drummond Safari Park, making Callander an ideal base for exploring the region’s rich history and natural beauty.

Furthermore, some argue that the area boasts some of the most picturesque walks in the UK. As a gateway to many scenic trails within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, from easy woodland strolls to challenging hill climbs like Ben Ledi, it’s a prime spot for soaking up the breathtaking landscapes of the Trossachs.

The town also offers a variety of walks, including the popular Bracklinn Falls hike and paths along Loch Lubnaig. While Callander may not be home to some of the UK’s most famous walks, its location provides access to the Trossachs and Highland Boundary Fault, ensuring a diverse walking experience for all who visit.

Visit Callander offers some guidance on walks people can enjoy in and around the area. Speaking of the Callander Crags, it states: “This relatively short but challenging walk takes you from the Callander Crags car park up the steeply climbing forest path until you reach the top of the Crags.

“For this vantage point, on a clear day, you will see Loch Venachar, Ben Ledi and the Highland Boundary Fault. You can take a short detour at the top to visit the Queen’s Jubilee Cairn, which was originally built in 1897, and restored to commemorate diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012.”

It adds: “The Great Trossachs Path allows walkers of all abilities to experience the stunning landscape in and around Callander, and beyond. Options vary between short, 90-minute walks of less than three miles, Medium length walks of varying difficulty, lasting up to four hours or day-long treks some of which will involve steeply climbing hill paths.

“The most dedicated walkers can follow the circular, 30 mile, route. Wheelchair users can take the Brenachoile Trail from the Trossachs Pier at Loch Katrine.”

Meanwhile, online enthusiasts have been singing praises about the beautiful walks in the area. One said: “Love Callander!” Another wrote: “I love Callander – so many nice walks.”

A third responded: “We stayed in Callander the night after running the Ben Nevis Ultra (coming from the US). Beautiful place, memorable trip.”

Additionally, another individual chimed in with: “Callander is one of my favourite places in Scotland. It has the best fish and chips there too.”
