Deadpool & Wolverine broke a fascinating costume tradition for Channing Tatum, according to the actor’s own comments. As it stands, Deadpool & Wolverine‘s extensive cast can be seen to have played a big role in the MCU film becoming one of the most financially lucrative and critically well-received films in this recent chapter of the MCU timeline, Channing Tatum included.
The return of figures like Wesley Snipes’ Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine was paramount to making the multiversal adventures the movie details feel suitably grand and daring. Having Channing Tatum finally get to appear as Gambit – capitalizing on his previous casting in the unproduced Gambit movie – worked similarly, with this appearance also breaking a costume tradition for the actor.
Channing Tatum’s Deadpool & Wolverine Costume Is “The Only One” He Hasn’t Taken
During an interview with Sean Evans for Hot Ones, Channing Tatum discussed how his role in Deadpool & Wolverine broke an interesting trend the actor has cultivated over the course of his history on-screen. After Sean Evans referenced that Tatum was reported to have a history of keeping parts or full costumes from his previous performances, the actor explained:
“Yeah… the only one I haven’t taken to date is the one on Deadpool & Wolverine – because I was a cameo, so it was like, just a moment, you know?”
This makes sense, as while Tatum’s role as Gambit was one that has been focused on considerably by fans since Deadpool & Wolverine’s debut – since it saw the actor’s prior stymied Gambit movie prospects come to fruition years down the line – the character did have relatively limited screentime, which would logistically have complicated things in this regard.
Similarly, Deadpool & Wolverine leaving things open in a way where it seemed Channing Tatum could return may have also encouraged the actor to leave the costume for at least the time being – both to ensure the suit could easily be used later, and since a reprisal offers another chance to potentially keep at least an element of the costume.
The MCU Already Has A Return Setup For Channing Tatum’s Gambit (& His Costume)
With Channing Tatum’s Gambit confirmed to be part of the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, it very much seems the character’s Deadpool & Wolverine suit could be returning soon – unless the decision is made to give Gambit a new suit for the film, or Tatum is revealed to be playing a different Gambit variant who comes equipped with a different ensemble.
As it stands, Channing Tatum has playfully alluded to the prospect of continuing the costume trend with the Gambit suit once more in the future, jokingly telling Sean Evans after stating he hadn’t kept any part of the Gambit costume:
“But I have a plan. This is chess, baby… I’mma get all of them, like by the end of this thing.”
It’s worth noting here that the MCU’s X-Men reboot movie is impending, meaning Avengers: Doomsday could end up being the last time Tatum’s Gambit is seen before a new iteration debuts. As such, Tatum’s next Gambit appearance after Deadpool & Wolverine will be all the more fascinating with this – and his costume tradition – in mind.
