‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines’ Sequel in the Works at Netflix

Before KPop Demon Hunters took the world by storm and smashed viewership records on Netflix, there was another animated movie that everyone was talking about – only it was four years ago that it was released and fans no doubt thought it had powered down by now. That film, of course, is The Mitchells vs. the Machines produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the same creative pair who worked their magic on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Now they’re back, and the duo has reportedly joined forces with Sony Pictures and Netflix for an unexpected sequel.

According to Variety, Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans have been tapped to direct The Mitchells vs. the Machines sequel, which is now in the works at Sony Pictures Animation. Martinez served as the head of story on the first Mitchells film and is also credited as a story artist on Kubo and the Two Strings, Missing Link, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, in addition to working on the recent Netflix chart topper KPop Demon Hunters. This time, he will be making his feature directorial debut alongside The Bad Guys 2 co-director as part of a creative shake-up that sees Mike Rianda, who helmed the first film, hand the reins over to Martinez, while he serves as an executive producer with Lord and Miller, Aditya Sood, and Kurt Albrecht.

The screenplay for The Mitchells vs. the Machines sequel hails from Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, aka the Molyneux sisters, who are perhaps best known for their Emmy Award-winning work on Bob’s Burgers and for teaming up with Minty Lewis to co-create The Great North. Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but the story is likely to bring back all the main characters from the first film – including the titular quirky, dysfunctional family led by the mother-father duo, Linda (Maya Rudolph) and Rick (Danny McBride), together with their daughter Katie (Abbi Jacobson) and son Aaron (Mike Rianda).

More to come…
