UK’s cheapest break is ‘hidden gem’ in autumn with independent shops | UK | Travel

City breaks have become rather pricey recently, and even a UK staycation can leave your wallet feeling a bit light. However, there are still some destinations that offer value for money if you’re looking to escape for a bit.

Generally, avoiding the major tourist traps is the best way to snag a city break bargain. One city in Somerset, which may not be on your radar, has topped Which?’s list of the best-value UK city breaks, boasting an overall score of 86%.

Wells in Somerset outshone rivals from Liverpool to Lincoln to secure four-stars for value for money, cultural sites, tourist attractions and accommodation. Best of all, it’s still possible to find a hotel room for less than £100 a night, a feat becoming increasingly challenging as prices soar across the UK.

Officially England’s smallest city, it manages to cram a wealth of charm and attractions into a compact, walkable area. Part of the reason it was granted city status in the 1970s was due to its stunning cathedral which has become a landmark, reports the Mirror.

Wells Cathedral boasts an impressive Gothic style and includes the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens. You can explore this magnificent medieval palace and the 14-acre gardens, where you can spot wildlife, including swans and deer.

The cathedral also leads to Vicars’ Close, a cobbled lane reputedly Europe’s oldest residential street still boasting its original buildings. A stroll around Wells feels like stepping back in time, with the High Street brimming with quaint independent shops that are a delight to explore.

Wells is also home to numerous cosy, historic pubs where you can unwind after a day of sightseeing. The Crown, dating back to the 15th century, exudes a warm, inviting atmosphere, while The City Arms, established in 1606, served as the local jail before transforming into a pub and inn.

This compact city is also ideal for a walking weekend. The National Trust site Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve, located on a limestone gorge, offers breathtaking views across the Mendip Hills.

There are three different trails through the gorge. The longest and most challenging is 1.9 miles and features some rocky terrain, but the views make it worth the effort.

Just a short drive away lie the Wookey Hole caves. You can tour these stunning caves and even participate in activities such as climbing or taking adventure tours away from the beaten trails. Wookey Hole also houses a museum where you can delve into the history of the caves, and is home to Dinosaur Valley, a prehistoric-themed park complete with life-sized animatronic dinosaurs and enjoyable, family-friendly trails.

Wells, a city known for its weekly markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, is gearing up for the festive season with a series of Christmas-themed events. The Bishop’s Palace will host an Artisan Christmas Market on November 8 and 9, followed by a big Christmas market at the Market Place and Cathedral Green on December 6.

With over 100 stalls, visitors can look forward to festive food, gifts, and live music performances.

For those seeking a budget-friendly staycation, Wells offers a less crowded alternative to nearby Bath or Bristol, making it an ideal choice for a tranquil weekend getaway.
