Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has at least one more project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but his future in the franchise after Avengers: Doomsday has become uncertain, as there are elements that indicate he could either be done with the MCU or continue. At this time, Marvel Studios has yet to announce any plans for Hemsworth to return for Thor 5.
The actor was one of the MCU stars announced for the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, with that project being the only confirmed MCU appearance we have on record for Hemsworth in the next few years. Various theories about Thor’s role in the next Avengers movie’s story have emerged, with many fans worried Hemsworth could be done after the film, which is possible.
Thor Is One Of The Best Candidates For An Avengers: Doomsday Death
The MCU’s Avengers movies have grown exponentially from where they started. Out of the MCU’s original Avengers cast, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is the only confirmed hero to be back for Avengers: Doomsday. While the film’s cast has another Avengers star confirmed to appear, Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Doctor Doom, not Iron Man, this time around.
As such, Thor could be the only member of the MCU’s original Avengers team to appear in the 2026 film. That would make him a prime candidate to die in Avengers: Doomsday, as he is one of the most beloved characters in the MCU, with Thor’s death sure to impact audiences worldwide. The Russo Brothers’ previous Avengers movies killed multiple fan-favorites.
Given that Thor is one of the MCU’s most powerful heroes, his death in Avengers: Doomsday would also be a great way to prop up Downey’s Doctor Doom. As the Marvel villain has only had a cameo appearance in the franchise so far, the MCU’s next Avengers movie will have the job of properly introducing Victor von Doom and making him a multiversal threat.
Doctor Doom being powerful enough to kill Chris Hemsworth’s Thor would clearly state that the villain is extremely dangerous. Hemsworth’s Thor could also die by sacrificing himself to save his brother. Thor and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki will be reunited for the first time since Thanos killed the original Loki in Avengers: Infinity War.
Loki’s current role as the protector of the multiverse puts him as the hero Doctor Doom will have to go through if he wants to control the multiverse. While that could lead to Loki dying again, it would be more impactful if Thor saved his brother, which he couldn’t do against Thanos, but died as a result.
Deadpool’s Connection To Thor Might Rule Out An Avengers: Doomsday Death
While there are many reasons that make Chris Hemsworth’s Thor a good candidate for an Avengers: Doomsday death, I believe his story is still not close to its ending point in the MCU. As far as the upcoming Avengers movies are concerned, I think that Marvel might have already set up a plot point involving Thor for 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
Deadpool & Wolverine introduced a gag that had Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool watching himself being injured in Thor’s arms, with the God of Thunder crying over Wade Wilson. The TVA’s Agent Paradox said that he was not supposed to see that, with the moment becoming a running gag throughout the film, as Deadpool fixates on the reason Thor could have been crying.
Well, the MCU has yet to reveal what that was all about. While Ryan Reynolds has been reported to be part of Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast, the actor was not one of the stars officially announced by Marvel Studios for the film. As such, if Deadpool is not in Avengers: Doomsday, I feel Hemsworth’s Thor has to at least stick around until Secret Wars.
There Are Still Storylines Left For Chris Hemsworth To Explore In Thor 5
Beyond any plots in the upcoming Avengers movies, there are a few Thor-centric storylines that could only be followed up on in a new solo movie, indicating the hero’s survival in Avengers: Doomsday. For instance, Brett Goldstein’s Hercules made his MCU debut in Thor: Love and Thunder’s post-credits scene. The character was sent on a revenge mission after Thor.
Avengers: Doomsday will have way too many characters and Doctor Doom’s storyline to give any attention to Hercules. Likewise, the tease of Jane Foster arriving in Valhalla and how we could see more of her and deceased Asgardians is too good a plot point to be forgotten, and Thor 5 could explore that alongside Thor being a father to the young Love.
In the past, Hemsworth addressed Thor 5‘s chances. While the actor did not have a definitive answer on whether the film could happen, he teased that Marvel was looking at where Avengers: Doomsday‘s characters would go after the 2026 movie. Hemsworth noted that he loved being a part of the Avengers movie. As for Thor 5, he said, “We’ll see what happens.”
Chris Hemsworth Has Responded To His Avengers: Doomsday “Goodbye” Rumors After Video
While there might be storylines left for Thor to return to the MCU after Avengers: Doomsday, a video shared by Hemsworth seemed to hint that he was getting ready to say goodbye to Marvel with the film. Hemsworth later noted how that was “certainly not the intent.” The actor simply wanted to thank the fans as he started a new chapter as Thor.
Based on the storylines set up for Thor in the MCU and the actor’s comments regarding the Thor “goodbye” video situation, I believe that we will see Hemsworth in the franchise beyond Avengers: Doomsday. Sure, Thor dying in the film could be a major moment, but there is still more to explore with the character, and the actor seems game to do it.
