Cosy ‘proper’ pub where royalty like to get a pint beside an open fire | UK | Travel

One of the most ‘famous’ pubs is also a spot where Prince William stopped by on a secret visit after an official engagement in Cornwall. The remote inn, on Dartmoor in Devon, has a cosy open fire – and it’s said to have “never gone out” since the pub opened in 1845.

The Warren House Inn is situated over 400 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Dartmoor National Park. It’s located in Postbridge, in the stunning, remote landscape between Princetown and Moretonhampstead. The old historic pub is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, so it’s only natural that royalty should decide to pop into the inn now and again. Prince William posed for a photograph at the pub, in front of the infamous fire last autumn, on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

But with its breathtaking scenery and classic British homely feel, The Warren House Inn is perfect for a wintertime visit for anyone, if you like getting away to the middle of nowhere.

Those who’ve visited describe it as a “proper pub” with hearty meals and “endless views” – and the rabbit pie lunch, known as “Warreners Pie” is said to be “delicious”.

Recent visitors who stopped by for food and a pint have reviewed the cosy pub on TripAdvisor, one described the “free atmosphere” as being “so welcoming in an ever-changing world”.

The reviewer wrote: “We’d been for a windy and wet walk on the beautiful moors, my husband and I had been before some years back and were delighted to find the rabbit pie still delicious.

“We had our two Labradors with us and sat in the dog area, which had lots of space rather than feeling all crammed in as some pub dog areas are, the staff were so friendly, as soon as we were blown in through the door.

“Adore the fact that this pub is genuine, it’s – thank heavens -‘interior designer‘ free atmosphere feels so welcoming in an ever-changing world, it was very busy and on a pretty wild day weather-wise. People clearly adore it.”

The Warren House Inn website explained the history of the 1800s pub: “Originally built to serve the busy local tin mining community, the inn was always a favourite resort with miners from neighbouring Tin Mines, including Golden Dagger, Vitifer and Birch Tor Mines.

“During this time it must have been a bustling place with the mining and passing travellers. The last commercial mine (Golden Dagger) was closed in 1930, thus leaving the Warren House Inn lonely and exposed; it survives today on passing trade and tourism.

“The inn is a free house and is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall; it enjoys breathtaking, extensive views over the ever-changing face of Dartmoor, and you will be assured of a very warm welcome, not least from the fire which is said to have been burning continuously since 1845.”
