‘John Wick’ Star Jabs Sydney Sweeney Over ‘Christy’ Box Office Flop

The financial performance of movies over the past month hasn’t been the best. Following recent reports that the October revenue for movies had hit a record new low for the first time in 27 years, it was expected that only more films would continue to struggle. Now, one recent release has stood out more than most this past weekend: Christy, the sports biopic directed by David Michôd and starring Sydney Sweeney, had one of the worst box office openings of its size. While there have been several reports about its disastrous performance, one actor has spoken out, putting blame on Sweeney for the film’s lack of success.

Ruby Rose, best known for her roles in the John Wick franchise as well as the CW Batwoman television series, was at one point attached to the film but eventually dropped out of the project. Now that it has been released, the actor took to Threads to voice her frustration at the lost potential of the film. Specifically, Rose would call out Sweeney, and the fact that she was portraying a prominent figure in the LGBTQ community despite not being a part of it herself. The actor’s full thoughts on the matter can be read below:

“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time. For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

For Sydney Sweeney, ‘Christy’ Wasn’t About Box Office Success

When compared to other films that opened in more than 2,000 theaters, Christy ranks number 12 in the list of the worst box office performances. Unfortunately, that record gets even worse when removing re-releases of movies, which would then make the sports biopic climb up to the number 9 spot. Despite the backlash that the film is receiving and the widespread reporting of its failures, Sweeney remains proud of the movie, as she would release her own statement on Instagram this past Monday. In it, the actor would argue that the message of Christy was much more important than any box office numbers and, regardless of the financial performance, it’s a film that she was glad to have been a part of:

“This experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life. This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. Through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives. If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. So, yes, I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”
