‘Scenic’ fishing village with TV fame has ‘delicious fish and chips’

A ‘beautiful’ fishing village in Cornwall with a traditional chip shop has been praised for its ‘delicious’ meals, with one fan suggesting the restaurant is the ‘best fish and chip shop in the country’.

Located in North Cornwall, Port Isaac is easily recognised thanks to its scenic harbour and pretty streets. It also has a claim to fame among TV lovers, as Doc Martin fans will know the village as Port Wenn.

Visit Cornwall explains: “Port Isaac is a quintessential Cornish fishing village, known for its narrow, winding streets lined with charming whitewashed cottages that overlook a picturesque harbour, locally referred to as the Platt. Since 2004, it has gained fame as the fictional village of Port Wenn in the BBC series Doc Martin.”

However, the village went viral for another reason when TikTok user @fredtoktik visited and enjoyed a meal from Port Isaac Fish & Chips. He told followers: “I think I’ve found the best fish and chip shop in the country and most certainly all of Cornwall.”

Fred explained: “This is Port Isaac Fish & Chips, located in a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast of North Cornwall. This was a no-nonsense establishment, so I’m gonna give a no-nonsense review. Battered sausage, fish and chips, tartare sauce, idyllic waters. What could go wrong? That’s right, absolutely nothing.”

He praised: “The batter was crispy, the fish was flaky, chips had a lovely combination of soft and crunchy, and the tartare sauce was unreal. I’ve never had anything like it. It was so fresh. I just loved it.

“Genuinely, there was nothing to fault here. The prices are reasonable and everything was locally sourced. If you’re ever in the North Cornwall area, definitely check out Port Isaac for the fish and chips.”

Found on Fore Street, the traditional chip shop also earned high praise on Facebook, reports Cornwall Live. Reviewing Port Isaac Fish & Chips, one foodie said: “Absolutely amazing food from here tonight, everything was delicious and piping hot.”

Another fan said: “We ordered here last night and what an amazing meal we had! Everything was perfect, the onion rings were out of this world and the chips, absolutely delicious! We will be ordering again asap and would definitely 100% recommend! Well done Tyler, fantastic fish and chips!!!!”

Someone else wrote: “Lovely fish and chips and some great lads working there getting orders through nice and fast. And homemade tartare sauce and a shandy can! Proper job!”

Meanwhile, a different reviewer commented: “It’s our third visit as we live locally, we have never visited during summer holiday season but just really fancied not having to cook.

“We arrived and it was heaving and I looked at my husband as if to say ‘let’s go this is going to take ages’ he went forward ordered our food and we were given our numbered ticket. I was expecting the quality of what we’ve had before to be slightly down as it was so busy.

“How wrong was I, the local haddock was incredible, the service was absolutely superb and the chips were at their best. How lucky are we to have you just a short drive from us. Well done to such a fantastic team.”
