Andy Cohen Reveals Who’s More Sober During CNN’s New Years Eve Special

As 2025 comes to a close, Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper reveal who gets more drunk during their iconic New Year’s Eve special on CNN.

After their infamous 2020 broadcast, where the longtime friends got very visibly drunk on air, the two have been taking it easy for the last five years. However, according to Cohen, the CNN anchor still gets pretty tipsy and sometimes even drunk during the live broadcast, as he usually doesn’t drink, so his alcohol tolerance is fairly low.

During an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Cohen revealed that he often takes over the New Year’s Eve show when he notices Cooper starting to reach his limit. The host claimed that the first sign is when his friend begins to slur his words. And, even Cooper himself admits to this, confirming that the statements are indeed true.

Cohen further elaborates, saying that Cooper usually begins to get tipsy at around 10:45 PM. So for the remaining hour and fifteen minutes, he takes full charge of the show. “Well, let me say this. Around 10:45 on New Year’s Eve every year, I become the straight man of our broadcast, okay? And I am driving the ship of CNN starting at 10:45,” he explained. His co-anchor chimes in and says that Cohen is “fully in control.”

The Watch What Happens Live host added that he got Cooper a little bit too drunk in 2024. However, he knows his friend well enough to realize when he’s at his limit and when to stop. He stated, “It’s the truth. I hear the slur in his voice. I know his voice so well. And last year, I really did get him a little drunk on New Year’s Eve.”

Cooper jokingly took his own jab at Cohen, saying that while he gets more inebriated than him, he still doesn’t fully trust his judgment, as he was also drinking. The anchor said that during the last half hour of their livestream, he always scours the internet to find the reactions of the public and see how much damage Cohen has done to both him and CNN. He added that he wanted to “see in what ways he has screwed us over.”
