Saturday Night Live aired its Christmas episode tonight, and it was filled with Holiday fun and even some tears as Bowen Yang tugged at the audience’s heartstrings in his last sketch.
Bowen Yang’s Heartwrenching Final Sketch
As reported earlier this week, longtime cast member Yang announced his departure after the Christmas episode. The actor was heavily featured this week (in a good way), and the night ended with a bittersweet meta farewell to Saturday Night Live. In the skit, Yang portrayed an airport employee selling eggnog, announcing that this was his last shift.
He had a monologue about how much he enjoyed his time on the show and how grateful he was. He tearfully added that any success that he has in the future would be because of SNL. The segment ended with Ariana Grande joining him on set, telling him that she wouldn’t miss his last shift for the world. This heartfelt farewell presented through a comedic sketch was an incredible way for Yang to end his tenure at the long-running late-night comedy show.
Home Alone Slasher Film
One of the biggest highlights of the night was perhaps a parody of the classic Christmas film Home Alone featuring Grande as the iconic Kevin McCallister. At first, the scene appeared to be very wholesome, a little too wholesome. It picked up where Kevin’s mom, Kate, finally returns on Christmas Day, with the rest of the family following shortly after. However, instead of a happy ending, the entire McCallister family ends up getting slaughtered because Kevin forgets to take down the many traps he set up for the burglars.
It is then revealed that it was all a hallucination, and Kate was just suffering from sleep deprivation. But, at the very last minute, their neighbor comes into their house, announcing that he has made up with his son. The startled Kevin and Kate, so the neighbor’s solution was to murder them with a shovel.
Weekend Update Fell Flat
The Weekend Update was disappointing. Michael Che and Colin Jost had a tradition where they would do a joke swap during the Christmas episode. However, Che decided to pull one over on Jost and told him before filming that they weren’t doing a swap this year. However, Che shocked him with a set of jokes that he wrote while he got away with not having to read anything. While this might have seemed like a “win” for him, it ended up being very disappointing for the viewers, as a one-sided “joke swap” isn’t very entertaining at all.
Love is Blind Starring the Grinch
Saturday Night Live did a holiday parody of Love is Blind this week, starring the Grinch (Mikey Day). The green creature was Grande’s match on the popular dating show. While things didn’t work out at first, the odd couple revealed on the reunion show that they got back together and were expecting a baby.
Final Thoughts
This week’s Saturday Night Live episode was a lot of fun despite a few flops, such as the stunt Che pulled during the Weekend Update segment. However, several other Christmas sketches made up for it. Yang’s last sketch was probably the highlight of the show. The cast member shedding real tears while saying goodbye to his colleagues was enough to bring tears to the eyes of the viewers.
