The former Aquaman star is joining the DC Universe for his dream role, as part of James Gunn’s franchise. As Jason Momoa’s Lobo was finally unveiled in the Supergirl trailer when it was released in December 2025,
During his appearance on Happy, Sad, Confused, Jason Fuchs shared details on the Lobo movie that he was hired to write nearly a decade ago for Warner Bros. “I’d had written a Lobo script many years ago for DC, which of all the things I’ve written that didn’t get made,” he shared before adding, “I think that Lobo script is my favorite cuz it was the tone of that Lobo was Guardians of the Galaxy if Quentin Tarantino had directed it. It was hard R.”
The IT: Welcome to Derry showrunner teased how it was a “psychotic movie, very violent. It made Deadpool look like a Disney family film, which is probably why it ultimately didn’t get made, [laughs.]” According to Fuchs, Lobo “was one of my favorite projects we didn’t get to see across the finish line, but it was a fun one.”
When asked who he had pictured as Lobo, he made it clear that it was Momoa, saying, “Who could play that role, but Momoa?! We never got to the stage we were talking to him, but it was always [him] in my brain.” He also shared how “Michael Bay was going to direct it, which would have been equally insane.”
In the end, Fuchs described how “it was a weird time in the DC universe where it didn’t quite fit into what they were doing.” As he “loved writing that script,” he teased that “there was a Green Lantern involved. There were all kinds of fun DC characters who popped up in the context of that.”
While he believes “at some point, they will” make a Lobo project, Fuchs stressed that “I don’t think they’ll make my Lobo, but I’m sure that at some point you will see a Lobo film come together because it’s just one of the great characters.” He revealed another DC character who was going to be part of the story, saying, “And yeah, there was a real fun dynamic between Lobo and Jack T. Chance. Jack T. Chance was a huge part of that story.”
Jason Fuchs: There’s a lot of Lobo stories to tell, and I’d used a lot of Legion, also. A lot of it was definitely a Lobo movie, but it was also, in some ways, a first film in what could have been a Legion series. It was a pretty nutty movie. I remember there was a moment early in the script where there’s a bad guy who pleads for Lobo’s forgiveness by saying that he’s got a mother to think about and says, ‘Please what would become of my mother? What would become of Martha?’ and Lobo goes, ‘What did you say?’ and he goes, ‘Martha, it’s my mom’s name!
He goes, ‘No way, Your mom’s Martha? My mom’s Martha!’ He goes, ‘Yeah,’ And the bad guy is like really hopeful, and then Lobo just boom blows his brains out, goes, ‘What the f–k was that about?’ It was really a love letter to the comics. I love the Snyderverse. I was so lucky to be a part of it and it was fun to momentarily play with what that could be.
He also shared, “As a DC fan, I’m as excited as anyone to see what comes of it. I’m really excited to see Lobo finally make his appearance in the Supergirl trailer.” Momoa was first added to the Supergirl cast in December 2024, with filming wrapping in May 2025.
With Lobo’s appearance in Supergirl, and Momoa being attached to the role, it wouldn’t be shocking if DC Studios has plans for a solo project with the star down the line. Obviously, DC Studios will first see how the film performs at the box office before greenlighting any spinoff for him.
