A 19-year-old man died late Saturday after a shooting during a police stop in Anaheim, officials said.
Police said the shooting took place after two officers who were on patrol approached a group of more than a dozen people at 9:32 p.m. in the 800 block of South Philadelphia Street in Anaheim.
Law enforcement officials said there was a confrontation followed by an exchange of gunfire, leading to an officer shooting a 19-year-old, who died. It was unclear if police or members of the group shot first.
Police said that 12 people were briefly detained, but no arrests were made.
“In the aftermath of the shooting, an unruly crowd started to form, requiring additional resources to be deployed for the safety of the officers and the integrity of the investigation,” said a statement from Anaheim police. “One subject was struck with a non-lethal round and transported to the hospital in stable condition.”
Police said they recovered a firearm from the scene and that officers had “minor injuries.”
Because an officer fired a weapon, police said the ongoing investigation includes the Orange County district attorney’s office as well as Anaheim police homicide detectives, the department’s major incident review team and internal affairs.
