Patrick Dempsey’s upcoming hitman series Memory of a Killer is secretly a perfect follow-up to his role in Dexter: Original Sin. Patrick Dempsey joined the cast of Dexter: Original Sin last year as Captain Aaron Spencer. While he won’t be able to reprise the role as Original Sin season 2 was canceled, he’s already found a replacement for it in the form of Fox’s Memory of a Killer, which is set to premiere on January 25.
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about Memory of a Killer, from its interesting premise to Patrick Dempsey himself, but Dexter fans have even more reason to mark their calendars. Memory of a Killer isn’t part of the Dexter franchise, but it should serve as a perfect replacement to Original Sin all the same. That’s mostly because of the character Dempsey is playing, a hitman keeping his job a secret.
Patrick Dempsey’s Memory Of A Killer Is A Do-Over For His Dexter: Original Sin Role
Now, Memory of a Killer is giving Patrick Dempsey a chance to play another character who is extremely similar to his Dexter: Original Sin role. Dempsey played Captain Aaron Spencer in Original Sin, the captain of Miami Metro. As the show revealed, Spencer was actually living a double life as a serial killer who kidnapped and killed children, including his own son, to inflict pain on his ex-wife.
In Memory of a Killer, Dempsey plays Angelo Ledda, a man who secretly works as a hitman as he’s diagnosed with early-onset Alzehimer’s disease. While there’s no mystery surrounding Angelo’s status as a killer in Memory of a Killer, it’s a very similar role to Captain Spencer in Original Sin. Both are characters who hide a deadly and dark secret life, both have a family they hide away from, and both roles should give Dempsey a chance to use the same acting tactics.
Memory of a Killer should also be a chance for Dempsey to dive deeper into this kind of role than Dexter: Original Sin was. For much of Original Sin, Spencer’s life as a killer was hidden even from the audience. Dempsey didn’t get a chance to play the darker, murderous side of Spencer until episode 8. Memory of a Killer, however, isn’t hiding Angelo’s secret life, and it should be a better display of how well Dempsey can play a serial killer.
Memory Of A Killer Also Has A Lot Of Overlap With Dexter
Patrick Dempsey’s involvement in both Dexter and Memory of a Killer isn’t the only overlap between the shows, though. Both Memory of a Killer and Dexter have the same general premise and appeal. Both shows follow a murderous anti-hero and prolific killer as they try to keep their real identities secret from friends and family. Angelo is trying to keep his identities separate as his memory fades, and Dexter tries to keep his Dark Passenger in check.
Patrick Dempsey’s New Hitman Show Casts A 100 Star As A Dangerous Killer
Memory of a Killer, which features Patrick Dempsey as a hit man with early onset Alzheimer’s, has added an actor from The 100 as a series regular.
Memory of a Killer should also have the same suspenseful cat-and-mouse game as Dexter. We don’t know all the details yet, but Memory of a Killer certainly seems like it will focus on Angelo’s growing struggles with keeping his secret safe and away from his friends and loved ones. Dexter obviously had the same tension as Dexter tries to stay out of sight from both law enforcement and his loved ones.
That, coupled with Patrick Dempsey and his charisma, should make Memory of a Killer a perfect replacement for Dexter: Original Sin. Original Sin was canceled after just one season, and though Spencer wouldn’t have been able to reprise his role anyway, the show’s cancellation still left a Dexter-sized hole in many viewers’ watch lists. Luckily, Dempsey and Memory of a Killer can fill that hole.
