‘Supergirl’ Trailer Fan Reactions and Lobo Praise for Jason Momoa

The trailer for Supergirl was always going to divide opinions…and this time it isn’t Snyderverse backlash giving the next DCU movie a hard time. While James Gunn has not written or directed the next movie out of the traps in the new DC world, many people are already unhappy and have taken no time in letting everyone know it.

Supergirl will be the DCU’s tent-pole movie of the summer in 2026, with Milly Alcock taking flight as Kara Zor-El, taking on Krem of the Yellow Hills and Lobo, played by Jason Momoa in his post-Aquaman DC role. The first trailer has finally given everyone a good look at what they can expect from the movie. This has seen plenty praising the casting of Alcock and Momoa, plenty more already hailing it as the greatest movie of 2026, and a large selection slamming the movie, and Gunn, as a “one-trick pony” thanks to some strong Guardians of the Galaxy vibes.

It is hard for James Gunn to do anything with the DCU without it garnering a fair share of negative comments, even if some seem to be a little out of touch with the basis for the movie and are stuck in the past with other screen iterations of the character.

There were several comments just focusing on the moment Krypto empties his bladder on a newspaper article about Superman, many not appreciating the short scene despite its comical effect and continued emphasis on exactly who Supergirl and Krypto are and how they are built differently to the Man of Steel in their general demeanor.

Then, of course, there are the very obvious comparisons with Guardians of the Galaxy to contend with, as some even suggested that Gunn “just reused the Knowhere set and prosthetics from Guardians 3.” While this is likely not the case, it is hard to deny that the similarities are clear to see, while some changes to characters like Krem, who does appear to have been “Guardianized,” have also drawn complaints.

‘Supergirl’ Is Getting One Thing Very Right

Among the more complimentary comments from those who are genuinely looking forward to the next DCU offering and willing to wait until they see the whole movie to make up their mind about its merits, one consistent point of praise has come from the thing everyone knew was going to make everyone happy: Jason Momoa as Lobo.

While he is only seen in the most fleeting of glances in the midst of the trailer’s chaotic teases, the response has been unanimous in announcing Lobo as the best thing about the movie from the reveals so far.

Momoa’s casting as Lobo is something that was really the worst kept secret in superhero history. When Gunn and Peter Safran took the helm of the DCU, a meeting with Momoa saw the former Aquaman star celebrating his future in the franchise as “a role he was born to play.” While he did not explicitly mention Lobo at the time, it was pretty obvious given his love of the character.

Now, fans have just over six months, and several more trailers to come, before Supergirl blasts her way into theaters and finally seals the fate of the DCU one way or the other.
