The Most “Gruesome & Intense” Sci-Fi Action Movie of the Century Touches Down on New Streaming Home

There haven’t been too many directors that have managed to make huge waves with their debut movie, but you can count Neill Blomkamp among them thanks to his amazing sci-fi action gem that was released in 2009, and immediately took the world by storm. Finishing first at the box office its opening weekend, the film in question has gone on to be widely regarded as one of the best sci-fi movies of the century, and now, it’s set to return to Netflix next month to wow viewers yet again.

We’re, of course, talking about District 9, Blomkamp’s first feature film that hit theaters on August 14, 2009. Despite a virtually unknown cast, District 9 soared to critical and commercial success, ultimately finishing its run with $210 million, which is an amazing feat for an independent movie that was produced for around $30 million. Perhaps even more startling is that District 9 earned four Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture. Again, this was an amazing achievement for a debut film, and even though it didn’t take home the trophy, it further solidified the movie as a true sci-fi masterpiece.

Starring the likes of Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, and David James, District 9 was based on Blomkamp’s own short film, Alive in Joburg, which was released in 2005. Shot mocumentary style, the movie is a compelling look at themes such as xenophobia, segregation, government corruption, and media manipulation, which all work together to deliver a movie that – from start to finish – is as close to perfection as you can get. Check out the synopsis below:

“Thirty years ago, aliens arrived on Earth. Not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens’ welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent (Copley) contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.”

‘District 9’ Deserves Every Bit of Praise It’s Received

Holding a Certified Fresh rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, District 9 is one of those movies that deserves every bit of praise it’s received over the years. Not only is it a tremendous debut feature, but it’s a movie that causes the viewer to really think about real-world issues that are still relevant today, perhaps more so than ever. As critic Dan DiNicola put it:

“Neill Blomkamp has made an instant science fiction classic. From beginning to end, the thrills magnify and intensify into a horrific drama that will live for the ages.”

Others have called District 9 nothing short of “spectacular,” “gruesome and intense,” and “breathtaking.” Fans are mostly in agreement, too, as the film holds an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with one viewer writing: “Its vivid portrayal of human nature stays with you for years. The film is a sci-fi classic.”

If you’ve yet to see this modern sci-fi classic, or perhaps just want to revisit it for the first time in a while, be sure to check out District 9 when it comes to Netflix on January 1, 2026.
