You might not have heard of this island before but it should be on your list to look into.
In winter, it looks as charming as ever and you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to see this stunning part of Europe.
Svalbard, in Norway does not get many tourists, yet those who do visit are enamoured by its beauty.
On Tripadvisor, one person who visited penned: “Once in a lifetime; a real beauty.”
Another said: “You will not believe your eyes when you see 4 glaciers coming together in one fjord under the midsummer night sun. To see this view in this particular light is a privilege.”
During the Polar Night, the months of darkness from October to January, the Northern Lights dominate the sky both day and night, says Visit Svalbard.
Svalbard offers an unusual opportunity to visit a unique destination.
While on the island, you can expect large open landscapes, sparse vegetation and endless glaciers. It’s a sparsely populated place so you won’t find crowds of tourists and people.
Visit Svalbard says residents love living there and can’t imagine living anywhere else.
The island is known for being remote which makes its landscapes, which are largely untouched, even more fascinating to see.
For those who are feeling adventurous, there’s a range of experiences you can have from dog sledding to using a snow mobile.
Or, if these aren’t your type of thing, you can take a visit to an ice cave, or you can enjoy a boat trip.
One local, Lisa Djønne, says: “The nature-based experiences up here often take my breath away. I’ve been moved to tears too. It’s so raw and majestic up here.
“Remember that when you head out of the settlements, it’s recommended to be accompanied by an experienced guide who will protect you from polar bears. Remember to take a thermos of coffee. It’s much cosier then.”
If you’re looking for a new experience, this island won’t disappoint.
