Two signs in your mouth that could mean a vitamin B12 deficiency


Most of us understand that our bodies require a variety of vitamins and nutrients to function optimally. We typically obtain these essential elements from our diet, but occasionally, deficiencies can occur, necessitating a boost in certain nutrients.

Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in several bodily functions. It not only maintains the health of your blood and nerve cells, but also helps ward off anaemia, which can leave individuals feeling fatigued and weak.

Fatigue, a sensation of pins and needles, and weight loss are common indicators of a vitamin B12 deficiency. However, two symptoms that manifest in your mouth could also hint at a lack of this vital nutrient.

According to NHS guidelines, a sore and red tongue, medically known as glossitis, could signal a deficiency. Glossitis alters the colour and shape of the tongue, causing it to become painful, red, and swollen, reports Liverpool Echo.

The inflammation also gives the tongue a smooth appearance, as the tiny bumps housing the taste buds stretch out and vanish. Mouth ulcers could also be a symptom.

Insufficient intake of B12 can lead to anaemia, another sign of which is a diminished sense of taste. Some individuals develop a vitamin B12 deficiency due to inadequate dietary intake of the vitamin.

A diet rich in meat, fish and dairy products typically provides sufficient vitamin B12. However, those who don’t frequently consume these foods may risk a deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia is commonly treated with vitamin B12 injections. If you’re concerned about your B12 intake, it’s advisable to consult your GP, who can organise a blood test to assess your levels.
