Game of Thrones Author George R.R. Martin Makes Shocking Statement About House of the Dragon Boss

Things are far from rosy for the co-creators of House of the Dragon. That’s according to George R.R. Martin, who collaborated with Ryan Condal on to start that show.

The Game of Thrones prequel has been nominated for multiple Primetime Emmy Awards with a third season dropping this year. As successful as that program has been, it’s not been without its challenges between the creative team. George is opening up about his current relationship with Ryan, which by all accounts appears to have gone stale.

Apparently, you don’t need to get along to produce a hit TV series. While George and Ryan are the brains behind House of the Dragon, they appear to have more than their share of differences. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, George called his current relationship with Ryan “worse than rocky. It’s abysmal.”

For George, everything was fine between them after the first season of House of the Dragon. He says Ryan took his constructive criticism initially well and made script changes accordingly. Following the end of the opening season, however, their relationship seemingly took a turn.

It sounds like it all began when showrunner Miguel Sapochnik left after the first season due to a disagreement. George allegedly sided with his co-creator on those conflicts. According to George, Ryan stopped listening to the notes he would give during the second season, and that behavior has apparently persisted. George says at times Ryan told him why he wasn’t going to do his suggestion, while he would sometimes say he’d think about it.

Things escalated to the point where George claims that HBO told him to submit all of his suggestions through them instead. As successful as the show has been, it’s come with other issues as well. One of its stars, Olivia Cooke, called out the trolls of the show in September.

George had previously slammed decisions made on the TV adaptation of the show, calling those decision makers in a blog “toxic butterflies.” That post has since been deleted.

The third season is expected to be released in the middle of this year.
