Hugh Jackman has made a name for himself playing the comic book hero Wolverine for 25 years, and despite making a “final” appearance in 2019’s Logan, he is now very much back in the role for at least one more movie. However, in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, the actor really wished he had not included one other returning star for a hilarious reason.
The MCU began life in 2008 as a brand new Marvel franchise, with new stars taking over the guises of some classic characters from Marvel Comics, including ones that had been previously played by other people in the past. However, as the MCU moved into its multiverse storylines, there was a chance to so something unprecedented and bring back other iterations of characters that had not been seen on screen for decades.
After Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as well as several villains who previously faced off against those two Spider-Men, Deadpool & Wolverine went one step further and brought back older Fox stars Jennifer Garner (Elektra), Dafne Keene (X-23), and Wesley Snipes as Blade. In bringing back the original – and only – Daywalker, Jackman saw his own record as the longest serving Marvel star being broken by Snipes, who made his debut in 1998’s Blade and now holds a Guiness World Record. During a recent interview, Jackman responded to this, saying:
“If I had known, I would have banned him [from Deadpool & Wolverine].” Now it’s just a competition of who’s going to live longer. Actually, I’ll put my money on Wesley.”
When Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, they claimed the record as the longest serving stars in Marvel history. Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to claim the title, to then be superseded by Jackman in Deadpool & Woverine. But when Snipes was revealed to also be in the movie, Jackman’s record became irrelevant.
Wesley Snipes Could Still Return Again as Blade
Marvel Studios has spent the last six years attempting to reboot Blade, with Mahershala Ali having been waiting patiently in the wings as his solo movie has gone through several directors and writers who have struggled to come up with a working storyline for the vampire hunter.
This was made worse when Snipes appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine to utter the line, “There is only one Blade, and there will only ever be one Blade.” A prolific piece of tongue-in-cheek scripting for those who have followed the journey the Blade reboot has been on.
In the last week, it has been reported that Marvel Studios has now decided to scrap Blade’s solo movie altogether, and will instead introduce him in a collaborative Midnight Suns movie, which will see other characters, such as Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, and Doctor Strange combining their supernatural powers in a new superhero team. It has also been claimed that this has led to Snipes being offered one more run out as Blade in Avengers: Secret Wars. Whether this is true or not is something we will likely not find out for some time yet, with the multiverse ending movie not arriving until December 2027.
