Being a horror fan means there’s no shortage of hidden gems to discover, especially on the independent scene. 2025 was ripe with favorites like Bloody Axe Wound, Fréwaka, and The Ugly Stepsister, and it looks as if 2026 will be no exception thanks to the premiere of Mother of Flies tomorrow on AMC+ and Shudder. Ahead of its debut, MovieWeb has an exclusive clip to showcase that highlights some of the weird and grotesque fun that’s to come in the folk horror movie.
Written and directed by Zelda Adams, John Adams, and Toby Poser (collectively known as the Adams Family), Mother of Flies continues the tradition of delivering fans haunting folk horror and unique surprises in the same vein as some of their other films, including Hellbender, Hell Hole, and Where the Devil Roams. Seriously, this is one talented trio that deserves more recognition, as is evident by the new clip from Mother of Flies that blends gore and suspense (seen below).
Opening with a close-up on tattooed hands while cries of agony permeate our eardrums, things shift to show a man vomiting up blood and chunks of what looks like undigested meat. As a string of snot descendants down from his nostrils, it’s clear that he’s in pain — both physically and mentally. The regurgitation goes on, and on, and on, making it uncomfortable to watch, but just as we’re about ready to tap out, things shift again to show the man gazing upon a hideous and decaying corpse that stares back at him with glorious indifference. Lasting for only a little over a minute, if this is any indication of what the entire movie is like, then horror fans are in for a real treat when it comes to Mother of Flies, the synopsis for which reads:
“Mother of Flies follows Mickey (Zelda Adams), a young woman facing a deadly diagnosis who heads into the woods with her father (John Adams) seeking dark magic at the hands of a mysterious recluse named Solveig (Toby Poser). For three days, Mickey endures Solveig’s extreme rituals of death magic. But every cure has its cost, and every curse is another’s gift. As buried secrets claw their way to the surface, the veil between the living and the dead begins to unravel, and Mickey finds herself facing dark truths that only the dead and the dying can know.”
‘Mother of Flies’ Is a Deeply Personal Movie for the Adams Family
Making its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival last year, Mother of Flies is already rated 97% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics who managed to catch an early screening. Called everything from “a creepily fun watch” to a movie “full of stunning imagery,” it’s also a deeply personal film for the Adams Family, who looked at it as an opportunity to explore their own history. “The human body has a habit of dying — too soon, too late, often painfully,” they said in a statement, adding:
“Horrors of the body, like cancer, are real; are human horror. As a family whose personal narratives serve as fuel for our imaginations, it was only a matter of time when we faced our stark history — pretty much every family’s history — with cancer. Mother of Flies offered us a creative avenue to reclaim these dark stories, these very personal, ugly truths, and to transform them into something viscerally new, resurgent, alive — and yet, inevitably, still brutal.”
For fans looking for the deeper meaning in it all, going into Mother of Flies knowing all that is sure to add even more layers to Mickey’s story. Be sure to check out this tremendous folk horror film when it hits AMC+ and Shudder tomorrow, Jan. 23.
