Even some of the most seasoned media professionals have slip-ups from time to time. That happened to longtime sports pundit Stephen A. Smith during an awkward television moment on Tuesday.
The prominent personality known for his passionate opinions and in-your-face attitude had what can only be described as an oops moment on the air. He and some fellow football analysts were discussing the Houston Texans’ 30-6 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday. Stephen referred to one of the Texans’ receivers as Charlie Kirk by mistake. The political activist was assassinated during a campaign rally in Utah last September.
An on-air moment saw Stephen A. Smith call Christian Kirk the wrong name
It’s a rare on-air screw-up moment that Stephen would rather forget. On Tuesday’s edition of First Take on ESPN, the renowned personality said, “We saw Charlie Kirk catch 8 receptions for 144 yards.” Those beside him were quick to correct him, as it was in fact Christian Kirk who’d done that for the Texans against the Steelers on Monday. Stephen was quick to apologize for the blunder.
Charlie’s life and death have had a polarizing effect on people. Stephen had even previously discussed his tragedy on a podcast, criticizing people online who were celebrating his death. He proceeded to praise the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers for having a minute of silence in Charlie’s honor.
Although he’s better known in the sports world, Stephen has been linked to politics before, with rumors that he may seek the Democratic nomination for President in 2028. Stephen blasted Donald Trump in December for his Truth Social rant following the death of Hollywood director Rob Reiner. The President called Rob deranged, among other things, online.
The Texans’ victory put them into the AFC Divisional Round, where they will face the New England Patriots on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.
