Netflix is about to have an explosive month when its most popular crime thriller returns for an action-packed third season. That thriller is The Night Agent, and given how much happens in the first two seasons, now is the perfect time to catch up ahead of Season 3’s arrival. Like so many of the streamer’s most popular blockbusters, The Night Agent leaps to the #1 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 every time a new season drops. This began in March 2023, when Season 1 premiered to 168 million hours viewed within the first four days of release, revealing immense interest in the adaptation of Matthew Quirk’s novel. The political thriller was swiftly renewed for a second season, followed by a third that arrives on Feb. 19.
The Night Agent revolves around FBI Agent Peter Sutherland (played by former iCarly child actor Gabriel Basso), whose career takes an unexpected turn when Season 1 finds him wrongly suspected of being involved in a DC Metro train bombing. He is thus assigned a job in the White House basement as a Night Agent, monitoring a top-secret emergency phone line that never rings – until it does. On the other line is Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), a brilliant tech entrepreneur whose undercover-agent aunt and uncle have just been killed by assassins. Peter must then do everything he can to protect Rose as the unlikely duo works together to stay alive, uncover a government conspiracy, expose a White House mole, and prevent an assassination attempt on the president.
Season 2 finds Peter and Rose reuniting, this time to prevent a deadly chemical weapon from being used in a terror attack on the UN. They’re aided by Noor Taheri (Arienne Mandi), a junior aide at New York’s Iranian UN Mission who provides them with valuable intel in exchange for her family’s safe passage out of Iran. Peter’s new handler is Catherine Weaver (Amanda Warren), a high-ranking operative in the Night Action program who must oversee his work despite not trusting him. Season 2 also introduces Alice (Brittany Snow), who serves as Peter’s mentor once he transitions to an active role in the Night Agent program, and Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum), a dangerous and manipulative intelligence broker who effectively forces Peter to become a double agent in exchange for Rose’s safety. The Night Agent has put Peter through the wringer so far, and sadly for him, a valuable ally will be missing from his next go-around.
‘The Night Agent’ Season 3 Will Include Returning Allies and Deadly New Foes
Season 3 will continue The Night Agent’s trend of putting Peter in high-stakes, life-or-death situations that force him to make life-altering decisions, often for the safety of others. According to Netflix, Season 3 will see Peter “sent to track down a young Treasury agent who has fled to Istanbul with sensitive government intel after killing his boss. What begins as a high-stakes manhunt quickly spirals into something far more dangerous as Peter uncovers a dark money network, evades paid assassins, and crosses paths with a relentless journalist whose pursuit of the truth puts them both squarely in the crosshairs.” The official trailer (which you can watch above) confirms that Season 3 will feature everything Night Agent fans love, from car chases and hand-to-hand combat to the deadly assassins described in the synopsis.
The trailer reveals a horde of new faces as well as some important returning ones (though, sadly, we’re not sure yet if scene-stealer Noor will be among them). We catch a flash of Jacob Monroe when Peter admits that he’s made a deal with the devil, setting up his central moral conflict that he’s responsible for all of Season 3’s impending chaos. Meanwhile, financial reporter Isabel De Leon (Genesis Rodriguez) effectively takes Rose’s place as the woman Peter needs to partner with to stop a new government conspiracy from unfolding. Just as Rose did in Season 1, Isabel is forced to hide when she realizes that a masked man has broken into her home, a character we come to recognize as Stephen Moyer’s mysterious hitman, The Father.
As Peter finds himself surrounded by new dangers at every turn, it’s comforting to know that Secret Service Agent Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola) and Peter’s handler, Catherine, are both making return appearances in Season 3. Not quite as comforting is Ward Horton’s return as Richard Hagan, who has been elected President of the United States after securing his rise through a corrupt deal with Monroe. Joining the returning characters in new roles are Jennifer Morrison as First Lady Jenny Hagan, Jay Batra as financial analyst Suraj Sharma, and David Lyons as Adam, Peter’s untrustworthy new partner.
One crucial character, however, will be missing from Season 3: Rose Larkin, who decided to break up with Peter and return to her life in California at the end of Season 2. Though there’s no indication that Rose has been written off the show entirely, she won’t be a part of Season 3’s action, marking the end of an era for the series. For her part, Luciane Buchanan supported the writers’ decision to explore Peter’s next chapter without Rose, hinting that she’d be open to returning given that this is “not a goodbye forever.”
The best way to get a comprehensive overview of everything The Night Agent’s first two seasons have to offer is, of course, to binge them both on Netflix well in advance of Season 3. Luckily for you, there’s still plenty of time to do so before the internet erupts with reactions to what promises to be the show’s most explosive season yet. If you finish your binge and still need something to tide you over, never fear: Gabriel Basso also stars in another Netflix project that happens to be the perfect Season 3 tie-in.
