28 Days Later: The Bone Temple recently brought Jack O’Connell’s menacing Jimmy Crystal back as a central antagonist in the latest zombie horror sequel. While there are plenty of fast-moving flesh eaters about, Jimmy’s cruelty proves to be one of the apocalyptic world’s most heinous aspects. Whether he’s lying his way into a subservient army or killing people in truly sadistic ways, Jimmy is portrayed as less human than Samson, the film’s central zombie figure, whom Dr. Kelson befriends.
While Jimmy and Samson are seen having their time in The Bone Temple, a newly released deleted scene shows a short interaction between the two before their clandestine meeting. Shared on YouTube via IGN, the scene comes after Jimmy and Dr. Kelson hashed out the charade for Jimmy’s followers. Jimmy is departing, heading back to his group, when he turns to give Kelson a wave, seeing Samson standing off on a hill in the distance. Samson makes his presence known, prompting a moment of cowardice that Jimmy can’t hide.
The scene effectively establishes Samson’s prowess and Kelson’s controlled relationship with the zombie. However, it also greatly undermines Jimmy by his turning tail and running away. While there may have been several reasons director Nia DaCosta chose not to include the moment in the finished film, given the implication on Jimmy, who is already on shaky ground by this point in the story, it was likely nixed to keep the luster of his lies going just a bit longer. Otherwise, the short moment works well and wouldn’t have hindered much else about the 28 Years Later sequel.
This is a developing story with more to follow.
