Yeah, we’re thinking he’s back. Keanu Reeves’ dog-loving assassin John Wick returns in the first trailer for a new video game spin-off, which will allow audiences to take control of a prime Baba Yaga long before the movie’s timeline. Featuring all the action-packed spectacle you could hope for, the trailer reveals our first look at the currently untitled AAA video game, which is set to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC. You can check out the footage below.
Created in collaboration between Saber, Lionsgate, and franchise director Chad Stahelski, star Keanu Reeves, and Lionsgate, the new “Untitled John Wick Game” will feature “an original script set in the John Wick timeline, expanding on the franchise’s intricate lore with familiar characters fans already know, as well as completely new ones,” according to a statement from PlayStation.
“Saber’s design will be faithful to the unique style and signature elements of the series, including a distinct gun fu combat system, jaw-dropping camerawork, immersive driving experiences, and a variety of memorable environments, all crafted to make players feel like they are in a John Wick movie, playing the role of John Wick himself.”
While more specific story details are being kept under wraps for now, it has been revealed that the video game will transport players to a “timeline years before the Impossible Task” that saw Wick leave the shady world of assassins behind him and “expand on the franchise’s lore.” Meaning the game will unleash a Baba Yaga long before he finds and loses love and is thrown back into the fray.
The ‘John Wick’ Game Will Allow Players to Truly Become Baba Yaga
But what about the action? Well, that’s one element that, based on the footage, won’t disappoint. The statement released alongside the footage promises a “style of fighting will feel like an authentic John Wick action scene taken straight from the films” that brings the assassin’s skills to a new medium “in a meaningful, fully playable way” thanks to a “distinct combat system” that will “ensure we stay credible to the iconic style of John Wick.”
Outside the digital world of video games, and despite the character’s seemingly fatal end in 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, there is much to come in the beloved action thriller franchise. Alongside Keanu Reeves’ possible return in John Wick: Chapter 5 (returning director Chad Stahelski last said the sequel is being worked on and has “a pretty good story that I think is cool”), several spin-offs and an anime are also now in the works.
One such spin-off will feature the return of martial arts legend Donnie Yen, who will reprise the role of blind assassin and scene-stealing killer, Caine. Not only will Yen lead the project, but he will also direct, with the actor and filmmaker saying, “The John Wick films have set an immensely high standard for action filmmaking, and I greatly appreciate Lionsgate giving me the opportunity to further elevate the franchise. I am both thrilled and deeply inspired to make this happen.”
