The directing duo behind The Mummy 4 sound like they know exactly what the franchise needs. In November 2025, news broke that Universal Pictures was developing a legacy sequel to The Mummy franchise and would bring back stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to reprise their roles as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn O’Connell. The film would be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett with a script by David Coggeshall.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are no strangers to horror franchises, having directed Ready or Not and are currently working on the sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The duo also directed 2022’s Scream and the sequel, 2023’s Scream VI. They also put their spin on another Universal Monster, Dracula’s daughter, with 2024’s Abigail. Speaking about boarding a franchise like The Mummy, Gillett told Empire Magazine that “Having stepped into Scream, our radar for jumping into another franchise is that it has to feel special and [David Coggeshall’s] script really does that. It is very beautiful and sweeping and scary and fun.” That certainly sounds like a return to form for the franchise.
This is a developing story.
