This Gory 94% RT Must-Watch Action Movie Has Virtually No Dialogue

Action movies are generally larger-than-life, with a combination of stunts and memorable one-liners, but Sisu breaks the rules by introducing a virtually silent protagonist. Granted, he’s just as compelling as many of the best action movie characters of all time. Sisu‘s hero has been compared to “a modern-day Rambo, despite being played by an unknown actor rather than a great action movie star.

The movie stars Jorma Tommila as the formidable Aatami Korpi, and critics loved it. Being Finnish, low-budget, and without a big marketable name, Sisu flew under the radar. That said, it has become a sleeper hit, gaining a 94% positive critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and overwhelmingly positive reviews despite being extremely gory.

What Is Sisu About?

Armed Nazis in Sisu

Sisu follows the scarred and silent gold prospector, Aatami Korpi, who discovers a rich deposit and prepares to take it to the town. Unfortunately, he meets a Nazi squadron on the way that ends up robbing him. The rest of the movie is a brutal cat-and-mouse chase in which Korpi begins picking off the Nazis in an attempt to get his gold back.

The movie’s title refers to a Finnish concept that is not easily translated, referring to perseverance against odds that seem stacked against you. While it appears that Sisu‘s action hero is in far over his head, it is quickly revealed that this is not the case. Korpi is an ex-commando who, rather than fleeing from the Nazi squadron, becomes a one-man army.

The Hero In Sisu Says Just 11 Words

War movies are often known for their profound quotes and witty one-liners, and the most quotable war movie characters of all time often have the best scenes. Most of the characters in Sisu have at least a few lines of dialogue, but the movie stands out because Korpi only says 11 words during the movie’s 91-minute runtime.

Korpi is not the only action hero to be stoic. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 robot made his career in Terminator 2, while Mad Max: Fury Road‘s Tom Hardy rarely fires off quips. However, both characters reveal a human side over time. Korpi’s humanity is shown through gestures when he is alone, but his silence makes him even more terrifying to the Nazis he successfully hunts.

Why Sisu Is A Must-Watch

Unlike many action movies, which often feature innocent people caught up in the violence, Korpi’s revenge mission has no undeserving victims. Watching him carry out gory revenge against the Nazis is not only cathartic but also offers a glimpse of other heroes, like the captive women he rescues, who return the favor in one of Sisu‘s best scenes.

Sisu can be streamed for free on The Roku Channel.

Many of the death scenes are so violent that they become humorous, and it is not surprising that Sisu has been described as “an Inglourious Basterds reboot.” It is a must-watch for action and revenge movie fans, and a rare achievement for a war movie to be this creative, or a hero this compelling, especially in just 11 words.

For those who couldn’t get enough of Jorma Tommila’s Aatami Korpi, the actor reprised his role in the official sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge. Like the first movie, the Sisu sequel leans into action and violence over dialogue.
