Wow, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Bringing Back A Villain Mario Hasn’t Fought In Almost 40 Years

As surprising as it may seem, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may have an ever greater degree of deep-cut Easter eggs than its predecessor. The second trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie goes quite heavy on the nostalgia, referencing a slew of popular games, from Super Mario Odyssey to Super Mario World.

Among the most intriguing callbacks to the past stems from what it showed of Princess Peach’s upcoming storyline. Apart from the surprising detail that she’s going to be engaging in a fight with Birdo, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer confirms that this sequence will also feature a handful of characters few were expecting would have roles in the film.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Bringing Back Mouser From Super Mario Bros. 2

During the trailer’s Peach vs. Birdo tease, a sunglasses-wearing mouse can be spotted entering the frame next to Peach. This character can be identified as Mouser, one of the six bosses of the 1988 Nintendo classic, Super Mario Bros. 2. In the game, Mouser throws bombs in order to waylay Mario and Luigi.

Many of the characters and concepts from that game, Birdo included, have since gained some level of popularity and remained somewhat relevant, but that was not the case for Mouser, who has been receiving references in subsequent Super Mario installments but hasn’t been a boss in years.

His last time in the spotlight came in 1989 when he served as a henchmen to King Koopa in the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. Now, it looks like he’ll be getting a much-appreciated revival from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

As for what he’ll be up to, that remains to be seen, but his proximity to Peach suggests at least a speaking role for the character, as opposed to a blink-and-you-missed-it cameo or Easter egg. That could be all it plans to offer for Mouser’s fellow Super Mario Bros. 2 boss, Clawgrip, who was spotted in the background of the same scene.

Mouser’s Role Might Be A Clue About Another Hidden Villain

King Wart Mario

Mouser returning is certainly an interesting development, but it could also be a clue toward an even higher-profile character return in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It’s worth noting that the setting – combined with the featured characters – makes it look like Princess Peach will visit an area with a strong Super Mario Bros. 2 influence, which could very well signal an appearance from Wart.

A giant, frog-like creature, Wart was the main villain of Super Mario Bros. 2, making the superior of Birdo, Clawgrip, and Mouser. With all three being on hand, it’s not implausible that Wart will be there too, possibly as the one in charge of this particular world that Peach is on at this point in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
