Final Fantasy 9 Return Officially Confirmed, Finally

Final Fantasy IX is still seen by many as a real high point in the legendary JRPG franchise, returning to the classic fantasy roots that made it so popular in the first place and bolstering the experience with a memorable cast of characters and an emotive story from start to finish.

As such, seeing it return in any form is bound to be an exciting revelation for existing fans of the series, and there’s finally been some good news, as the near-perfect release is finally confirmed to be returning, this time on the small screen.

Final Fantasy 9 Is Finally Back For A New Sequel

As first confirmed by RPG Site, the Final Fantasy IX animated series has once again surfaced on the EuroVisual official website, where it is currently listed as “in production.”

News once again emerged that an animated adaptation of the game could be on the way back in December of last year, but things have been pretty quiet since then, and in a world full of disappointing cancellations, no news wasn’t necessarily good news.

Fortunately, the show being listed online is tantamount to confirmation, and we even have a title, Black Mages Legacy, which certainly hints at which parts of the sprawling story will be the focus initially. At the same time, the listing also confirms that the first season will feature 10 episodes of 22 minutes each, which is a slight reduction from the earlier reports of a 13-episode count.

There are several reasons that getting to this point is an exciting milestone for the adaptation, with the French-made animated series actually beginning life at a different studio that ultimately went into liquidation before production really made any progress.

The animation is reportedly set to take place after the events of the game, where we follow a group of titular Black Mages that many believe could be the children of FFIX character Vivi Ornitier. The show is officially licensed by Square Enix, though it is being made without their direct involvement, and it will supposedly be aimed at children between the ages of nine and thirteen.

This Series Surely Means A Final Fantasy 9 Remake Is Coming?

Bringing the attention back to Final Fantasy IX in animated form could well be the biggest clue we have had yet that the developer is planning to drop a remake at some point. It remains one of the real high points of the franchise, and a full reboot would seemingly be a license to print money, so it’s difficult to think of a reason why they would be reticent.
