Summer is on its way and you might be thinking about your holidays already. If you’re considering a cruise, then there are a few things to know.
Going on a cruise is a great way to relax — sailing the open sea, and stopping off in all kinds of beautiful places, with everything you need at your fingertips. If you’re a first timer, then these tips from cruise expert Mark Barton working with Avanti Travel Insurance will be a great place to start.
When it comes to packing, Mark has one key piece of advice — don’t overdo it.
He said: “The storage areas in a cabin can be surprisingly limited, so it is worth checking that your suitcases will fit once you have unpacked. Bear in mind that the cupboard space and the area under the bed, where luggage is usually stored, may not be large enough for bigger hard-shell suitcases.”
His second tip is to check the electrical setup before you board. Ships may have European or US sockets, or a mix of both. Mark said: “Checking in advance and bringing the right adapter will save you frustration later.”
His third tip is to be on top of your medication. It can be difficult to replace prescriptions while you’re travelling so make sure you have what you need before you leave, especially if you’re visiting multiple countries.
Mark said: “Consider bringing more than you expect to need and keep it in your hand luggage. A little preparation like this can make your trip far more comfortable. It is also wise to carry the prescription and check any medication rules with your cruise line to avoid unnecessary issues.”
He also recommends having a few key extra medications on you, especially if its your first time on a cruise. You may experience some seasickness or nausea, so having remedies on hand is a good idea.
He said: “Bringing basic remedies such as motion sickness tablets like Bonine or Dramamine and an anti-diarrhoeal such as Imodium can also be helpful during travel.”
