Amid all his issues off the court, basketball has been the saving grace for Luka Doncic. The Los Angeles Lakers star revealed this week that his engagement with Anamaria Goltes ended. He and his ex-fiancée are currently in a custody battle for their two daughters.
Even with everything going on in his personal life at the moment, he’s still performing at a high level on the court. The Slovenian scored 51 points in his team’s 142-130 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night.
Luka Doncic is focused on his inner peace
Based on his performances this season, you wouldn’t know there is anything wrong in Luka’s personal life. He leads the NBA in points-per-game (32.9) and is averaging the third-most assists per game (8.5). After their victory against the Bulls, Luka was asked how he ensures his personal issues don’t affect his play on the court. Luka says that “basketball is giving me some kind of peace when I play a game.” His custody battle was reported on March 11.
Last August, the Lakers signed Luka to a three-year contract extension worth an estimated $165 million. The six-time NBA All-Star is not oblivious to the huge investment the franchise has made in him. “I have to be here. They pay me a lot to play for them,” said Luka.
While he’s been able to block out all the noise when game time comes around, seeing his girls these days isn’t easy. Luka recently visited UCLA Health. He was there to see his kids and said that doing so helped him put many things in perspective. His first daughter, Gabriela, was born in 2023, and Olivia came into the world last December.
Thanks to Luka’s contributions, the Lakers are third in the Western Conference standings with a record of 41-25.
